Based on Gaizidis and Wenger's statements every time a player comes close to big money. Based on the way we've done business for years.
What on earth makes you think we'd suddenly spend £85m on a player?
Mbappé is a rarity though; he's a world beater we actually have a chance, however small, of signing.
We know for certain that Wenger has made bids that at the time were right at the limit of where our finances allowed us to stretch to - Higuain, Suarez, Draxler and Gotze are the examples. The latter two were a similar profile to Mbappé when those bids were lodged - world beating potential, massive resale value, relatively lower wages across the length of a contract. And we're taking about £30-40m bids confirmed by the players and their clubs, when very few were going for that much.
Mbappé is something else altogether though and you can bet Wenger is more excited by him than anyone.
I also think Gazidis is a very, very astute guy and knows that he has to get the fans back on side and a signing like this would go a long way to achieving that.
£85m is as within our reach now as £40m was 3 or 4 years ago.
