Hate to break it to you, but it's not quite as easy as kicking the door down, throwing a bag of money on the table and shouting "SELL US BENZEMA!".

If we went about our business that way, I'm sure it would do us more harm than good.

Personally, I think that our transfer strategy and execution have been almost perfect in the last two years.

You can be aggressive with a smaller team. Even when they're refusing to sell, the player might protest and want to come to you. In such circumstances,if you throw in more money, you might just get the player as the selling side would take the money instead of keeping a disgruntled player.

Here, Benzema and Lewandowski will never fight their clubs to join us and would only do so if they are asked to leave. Jumping up and down their throat when even the player doesn't want to come and the selling side have no interest in the money would have absolutely no impact apart from spoiling our relationship with both the club and the player and killing off any chances we have of making the signing.

Maybe you don't get Benzema and Reus but you can definitely get Reus and a Benz alternative or a Reus alternative and another striker. If you are ambitious enough you can get 2 key players. Point is we won't even try to go that far. And thats why we won't be genuine contenders.

Not that I regret it didn't happen, but we clearly could have got Bitey McRacist that summer the same way Man City got Sterling this summer.

Qs is dead right; for a club like Dortmund it is merely down to how much money you are willing to spend to sign ANY of their players IMO. There are only a select few clubs who can afford to turn down top offers. Even a club like PSG would most likely listen to a good enough offer due to FFP.

I agree. We needed to get an alternative to these players who have the potential to be better than our current options. This would also mean showing ruthlessness and throwing out those who are not working out. Welbeck has good resale value because he is English and any team would pick him up for 20 Mlllion or more.

Any top striker in with Welbeck going out would have been a positive for the squad, but, we're not even considering such a deal.

If we managed to land Reus we could even let Theo go if we needed to free up more funds. There's a lot of transfer value in him and Welbeck. It's a bit ruthless but it's needed at this point. We've been banking for so long on players who keep getting injured or don't develop for various reasons. If we replaced them properly we could cash in without having to gut the squad on potential quality.

You don't force the issue by paying an extra 5-10m by the way, you do it by paying 70-80m for a 30-40m player, see Madrid.

City bidded publicly 3 to 4 times and unsettled Sterling.

We bid once, and that was it. We didn't try again after they rejected the first one.

We made one 40 + 1m bid and that's it. Though the initial idea was that it would activate his release clause but we are wrong at that.

We then decided not to go for it because we thought Liverpool wouldn't sell without a release clause. City kept trying and trying, higher and higher and ultimately did it.

Not true, he's only had one long term injury - last season - in his entire career.

I believe the scenarios are similar enough. Both came out to give an interview saying they want to leave Liverpool. Suarez even said he wants to join Arsenal. Then both missed their first training at Liverpool. City forced the rest, we didn't.

Sometimes we are just too gentlemanly in all these transfer dealings. We only wait for opportunities, we don't force the issue enough. It's the same when it comes to selling our players, which is why we don't get sky high prices.

Did he? I thought Suarez said he was tempted by the idea but wasn't really willing to piss off Liverpool just to join us
