Just seeing the second episode of the first season of The Shield.

Ridiculous end to the first episode. The Wire is better already.

The Shield is watchable but doesn't say much. Vick should be a criminal instead.

What do you mean easily accessible? And most people who have seen both give it to The Wire.

I don't speak for "most people", but The Shield is better than The Wire in my opinion. By quite some distance too. I've seen several people claim the same thing so it's not exactly an outlandish statement. Maybe you should give it more than a couple of episodes before you dismiss the whole thing.

I've seen 5 episodes. So far not so great. Watchable. I'm not going to stop yet. But if after a season it still not to my taste i'll call it quits.

The Shield isn't really anything like the Wire. The Wire is set up to be a big social commentary, it has a massive scope in terms of storylines, characters, etc. The Shield is a smaller show, its about a few characters, mainly Vic and its only really commenting on its characters. I think The Wire is a better show but it doesn't have single character that is as well drawn as Vic Mackey is.

I'll say this though Tony, The Shield is a show that improves the more you watch it so give it a chance.

the only issue i had with the shield is the procedural stuff that happened week to week felt a bit law- and-ordery, and distracted from the meat of the strike team/vic story line, which was the the most compelling part of the show.

I have to disagree there. I think it painted a great portrait of Farmington. Made the show more well-rounded and the plot less reliant on key events to get its points across. I wouldn't disagree with anyone who calls The Shield a character-driven show, but in my opinion it was just as much about the extreme social circumstances that breeded those kind of characters. I loved how the show depicted a society out of control on every level. Mackey is an inescapable result of moral compromises within an amoral society, just like Farmington is an inescapable result of its ethnic, political and geological background. Even those who refuse to compromise achieve very little in the end. It's a show about the dark side of humanity to put it bluntly.

conceptully that's understandable, but the week to week side stories just felt a bit bland in their delivery and my attention would waver. pretty much all of season 7 apart from the shane/vic conflict felt disposable to me. probably because im not a fan of cop shows at all.

To be fair I had to read the article three times before I noticed the mistake.
