Elba learnt/based his American accent off the NY one.
The character was supposed to have grown up in NY. I'm sure I heard Elba mentioning that in an interview. Also i've heard Americans talk about the credibility of the british/irish actors' accents and i've heard people say that Elba sounds NY.
I'm no expert by the way.
