Swearengen always had redeeming features; his care for Jewel, his special feelings for Trixie, how he treated Wu relative to how everyone treated Chinese and so forth. He did some pretty heinous shit in season 3 too!

Sure, but at the start all you really thought was "that's one cold-hearted fucker" ... by season three you felt he had been neutered and wouldn't end up doing much.

It was at its best when it was Cy vs Al in season two I think ...

Made the mistake of eating while watching the first episode of season 2 of Hannibal. Won't be doing that anymore. What the hell was I thinking?!

So, mad men. I don't buy for a second what they are doing to Don. It strikes me as totally out of character that he would ever willingly submit himself to something like that.

I finished watching True Detective a few days ago.
Ages behind everyone else as usual.
I thought the first four episodes were terrific but was less absorbed by the next three, and I was just a bit disappointed by Carcosa because I'd expected it would terrify me and it didn't.
I enjoyed the Cohle and Hart partnership, perhaps just a touch too much yin and yang, but the leads had charisma.
Think I preferred the understated Cohle the younger to the more out there older version.

Don't think so; have watched episode 6 of season 7. I just think it is totally out of character that Don would go back under the terms set for him, and the recent events happening regarding Peggy.

I am sorry for being vague, but I don't want to give things away. 🙂

I haven't seen this weeks yet (saving it a week), so this might all change...

I really like what they're doing with him. It's unlikely he'll get a happy ending, but this is the closest we've got to seeing that he's capable of change and growth (especially in his last couple of scenes with Sally, don't think we've seen him be honest with anyone like that away from Anna Draper). Before he would have just stropped and given up on the company, but he seems to get that his work makes him happy and he needs to actually make some sacrifices to get that part of his life back.

Peggy's become someone who devotes her life to her work but gains no happiness from it, especially as she's hit the glass ceiling in that world.

Don has walked away from pretty much everything so far in the show though when things have got difficult. Gave up on his family by stealing Don Draper's identity, gave up on the war, hardly sees his kids and so forth. He has also always wanted to be in control. This turn of events just seems so far from everything we have got to know about the character IMO, and I think it is very far fetched. It would have made more sense had he taken the very lucrative job on offer where he would have his 'normal' status.

But that's exactly the point, he's finally changing. He hit rock bottom last year after Sally caught him in the act and he broke down in that Hershey's pitch. Now he has to take the long road back...

The first scene of this season was him delivering a pitch to Peggy through the mouth of Freddy Rumsen. There's no great benefit to Don of doing this, no sneaky plan to get back his job back, I think him taking this 'low job' is like that, he just wants to be back at the company where he's had his greatest successes, and get what he'll see as some redemption in his life. He doesn't want to start again, again.

I'm so going to watch this. I'll be slightly disappointed if it's not an hour of Wheaton screaming in thin air though.

Think i'll give up on Mad Men. Only managed 6 episodes so far and its basically been a waste of time. Not my thing at all.

Here be spoilers...

Yeah this weeks episode made no difference to what I thought when you posted. Anyway Don went back under the terms originally because he just wanted back in. He starts off acting like a prick because the reality is different than he expected. Then he decides to get back to doing the work because a) he enjoys it and b) he's trying to at least look like he's playing nice. He also goes and fucks over his real enemies Cutler and the new guy with Phillip Morris. Whether Don is planning all this or whether he's trying to not act up but can't help it I don't know.

As for Don and Peggy well Don was never nearly as pissed off with Peggy as she was with him and I don't think its unreasonable for a pair with such a father/daughter type relationship to reconcile when forced to work with each other.

My only big complaint this season and its on character continuity is the sudden switch to make Burt Cooper a blatant bad guy. He has always been the voice of reason. Now he's a greedy, ruthless, racist.
