It's not about whether it's shocking it's about the reaction you can expect. Jokes about people's character are one thing, put yourself in Will's shoes if you're called out for the hilarious mess that is your marriage you'd have to swallow it because it's on you. Someone jokes about your wife's illness and you don't react at all you might as well get a divorce.

It definitely wasn't scripted. Smith sitting there scream "keep my wifes name out ya fucking mouth" wouldn't have happened with a scripted bit.

Maybe get the divorce when your wife admits on TV in front of you that she's been fucking your kids friend for 4 years. Its alopecia, its the oscars where jokes are made, he compared her to Demi Moore. Its a tame as fuck joke and the reaction is embarrassing for everyone except Chris Rock.

The whole situation was embarrassing, the Smith family is also yes but people talk about it like Chris Rock was handed a beatdown.

A joke nobody would have remembered otherwise. Instead now at what should have been the pinnacle of his career nobody will remember his Oscar winning performance but this.

The dude seems ok with other people fucking his wife but not ok with a comedian poking fun at her....

It doesn't, as a man you absolutely should know better because most women feel even less comfortable than before and that's without the cameras. Smith is wrong for doing that to his wife, he's not wrong for doing it to Chris Rock.

Guess it wasn't scripted then. Mind-boggling. When I saw the original video (just the stage entry) I definitely assumed it had to be.

In that case you'd guess it's the reaction of someone whose relationship is seriously troubled and fragile. Can't say I really judge open relationships harshly myself, but if you're snapping in public like that there's been a lot of heartache in private.

*Such episodes popping up during comedy segments will forever be cringe. Wouldn't care too much if I was Will Smith though; did what he thought was right for his family and picked up an award for his work. Chris Rock didn't violate the unwritten rules of comedy either to me. Everyone can move on.
Also open and polyamorous relationships; would be good to read more about how well these tend to work out. Through my narrow lens, feels like 'Californication' tendencies have been getting further normalized in certain cultures last 15 years, even personal circles and I'm struggling to be progressive on this.

It's Hollywood, most of them are fucking round and the ones that aren't are probably the biggest perves of all.

Take Kidman and Urban, for example. An acquaintance of mine was involved in a film featuring Kidman (won't give identifying information since this is public). Said she'd never seen two people do that much coke and sleep around that much. And of course, they were the happy couple on the red carpet today ...

I would imagine to be ok with an open marriage you'd have to be a very easy going, care free, hippy type character. Smith and Jada came across as anything but that.

I'll go out on a limb and say it's probably mostly people wanting to have their cake and eat it in open relationships. Might be my being conservative but the whole point of a relationship is the exclusive intimacy and trust you have with one other person.

Funnily enough jealousy seems to be an even bigger issue with polyamorous people from what I'm told by the few I know who tried it, most people can't manage their emotions in a relationship with just one other human how's that supposed to work out if you're a gang.

Misery comes in many forms ... the whole of human history is laden with formally exclusive relationships that have been tantamount to legalised abuse, from kings down to peasants, and the concepts of romance and mutual respect only received their current emphasis relatively recently.

It could have been an opportunity to stand up in his speech and explain the condition and become a bit of a spokesman for sufferers. Instead he shows himself to be a thug and ruins what should have been the highlight of his career after all these years and multiple nominations to finally win.

Anyway, Will Smith is an idiot - clearly his marriage is a sore point but before today I barely knew his wife’s name never mind everything else about her. He’s just guaranteed that everyone in the world finds out about his marriage and her condition.

Shit joke, mind, but not exactly the most offensive. I have more respect for Chris Rock that he didn’t escalate - God knows he had plenty of material
