Whole scenario's a consequence of the fatal problem of making the Oscars interesting, an institution that gives scant insight into the relative merit of recent films, and increasingly provides little other stimulation in line with its ostensible objective of celebrating the professional community of the Academy.
So the guest hosts have to generate controversy (social media engagement, just like this sub-thread), and they have to pull up a bunch of other nonsense every single year, while the general bankruptcy of the occasion becomes ever more plain.
