Gotze is such a passenger on defense though. Can we afford to pay him, ozil, and ramsey/caz in the same team?
I haven't seen him and ozil combine to good effect for the nt either

Shame about Mkhitaryan pining for Utd. Don't want Götze.
Götze is complete trash, few attackers have looked good for Germany so far but he's been an absolute disgrace this tournament
Götze is bound to be off form with the limited game time he has had at Bayern this season. I've seen enough of him to confidently say that he is a superbly talented footballer. Getting a young player like that, who is basically being kicked out of a top team, with a chip on his shoulder, is a great prospect in my view.
Agreed Rex, he's also been played in a position that doesn't work for him in a system that isn't really working for any of Germanys attack.
Playing him up top is madness, he's a guy you need on the ball more, not less.

Regardless of him played out of position he's been shit, for Bayern he played as an inverted winger often enough and stank the place up.
I think your assessment of his character ("chip on his shoulder")is way off, he has had limited game time because he lacks the hunger necessary to succeed at this level. Nobody doubts his talent but he clearly doesn't have his heart in the game. He's also a vain little dickhead who'd backstab his own mother if he saw any gain in it, no need to poison the dressing room with someone who laughed at the prospect of playing for Arsenal a few years ago
Laughed...
I don't care at all even if he did laugh at the prospect of playing for us a few years ago. If I were not an Arsenal fan, then I'd too much prefer being courted by Bayern over us. However, we have signed both Özil and Alexis on the back of them being nudged out of elite clubs. In that context, us signing Götze now fits very well. We also happen to need a player for the position he made a name for himself at Dortmund.
The only difference being that Özil and Alexis actually played well for the clubs that shoved them out.
Personally, I don't care about that at all. The bloke is 24 years old, and he has prior to this season proven that he is a supremely talented, quality player.
I'd take Götze myself, but it's certainly a risk. It seems like there's a lot of wishfull thinking going on - surely he'll turn good here for some reason, and him playing badly recently doesn't matter because.. Why? We're also going to play him on the wing if we sign him.
Every transfer is a risk. I don't think Götze is more of a risk than Mkhitaryan for instance, because I think he is a better player. Götze is coming from a situation where he is low on confidence, and hasn't enjoyed the confidence of his manager. Has less to do with him coming here, but I think he is going to continue his development wherever he goes when he is regarded as an important member of the team again.
Oh, and I certainly want to play him wide. I think it is his best position.
Fans always jump for bad apples like balotelli and Ben arfa absolutely horseshit players that have no interest in grinding out tough games and winning titles. We see the talent and get carried away. They might have 6 goodish months every 3 years given a free role.
But realistically these players aren't a solution to a problem they're just a fresh problem.
I don't know if gotze is one of these but if he is there's no point signing him.
Gotze is a talent but one of my criticisms of AW is that the team struggles to vary their style of play because AW plays too many passing playmaker types with a linking CF = too many artists and not enough artisans.
If we're looking for an alternative to Mkhitaryan then IMO it could well depend on whom we sign at CF, and as to what style AW wants to mainly employ.
For mind Mkhitaryan combines the attributes of a winger, WF and playmaker & would work with both a linking CF like Giroud and a direct CF like Vardy.
Gotze seems more playmaker than WF or winger and would suit a possession passing game, whereas Mahrez / Carrasco / Bellarabi are more direct goal scoring wingers with more pace and perhaps provide better options and balance to the team.
gotze would be a classic Wenger 1998-2002 signing. Clear talent who has lost his way, no issues with signing him personally.
Clear talent but I'm coming to the realisation that I don't want him because he limits us tactically.
Unless we sign a CF like Vardy then Rambo would be the only possible starting option to make runs off/ahead of the ball, and we'd also lack directness and pace. This means the team would be only capable of playing the 1 way & more of the Giroud style of playing off a linking CF.
Gotze IMO doesn't improve our goal scoring, and his value as yet another playmaker is not really required.

He played on the wing for Dortmund too.

Based on his record since 2012, he'd be our most prolific midfielder aside from Sanchez
Götze came to prominence at Dortmund. The same Dortmund side which was a breath of fresh air in Europe at the time because of their mad pressing and quick, counter attack football. Götze was an integral player in that side. To say that he is a passing drone only suited for possession football is well wide of the mark.
