The only 'Wenger effect' is that Arsenal fans overly obsessed with Wenger and can't fathom giving an opinion on football that doesn't at least partially bash Wenger and the club. They've paid £50m for a defender who was pretty clownshoes at defending last year, that's mad in my view.

Stones fills out a gaping hole in their squad, is young, English and very talented. But City will also need to invest a lot of time and patience into him as he is the most error prone defender in the league. I'm not sure they can afford that.

Yeah, I agree with that, Ofty. Stones is top class on the ball IMO, but he is only average at defending.

I have to say though, that Guardiola deserves admiration for completely adhering to his philosophy and vision. He played us the other day preferring to use Kolarov and Fernando as CBs because of their passing ability over more accomplished defenders who are actually good at defending. For us, I reckon that would mean that both Holding and Chambers would be ahead of Mertesacker and Gabriel from day one. 🙂

I don't agree Pogba has anything like the ability to become the best in the world. Not even close. His reputation greatly exceeds his actual level of ability. However, Pogba and Zlatan are two signings that were badly needed, more for their name than their quality.

Let's be realistic though; Ibrahimovic is 35 and no one else wanted him; not City, not Chelsea and certainly not the big three. They're probably laughing themselves silly at the amount United have paid, especially given they gave him away for nothing 3 years prior. Hummels left Dortmund and United were nowhere because he's a proper top player that was in-demand - they couldn't compete because they didn't qualify for the Champions League - Hummels said exactly that.

It's a gamble from them to try and restore some of their glamour and appeal, to try and save their brand if you like. It's not particularly well thought through from a team/squad building point of view, stupid from a financial point of view (the amount they're paying Zlatan a week is nearly worse than the fee for Pogba!), but maybe something to applaud in their ambition to try and reverse the decline of the last 5 years.

I'll guess we'll have to see how it all works out, masterminded by the biggest gamble of the lot, that little tosser Mourinho.

I agree it's a massive gamble but then again United can afford it. Real Madrid wanted him this Summer and Barcelona was after him last Summer but was probably put off by the price - and the fact that Raiola demanded 20 million down his own pockets as part of the deal.

The fact that Pogba is moving from a CL contender to a Europa League club proves that money talks over current CL status rather than Pogba was not wanted by the true top clubs in Europe.

Probably a combination there. If Pogba had the opportunity to play for Real or Barcelona I think he would have gone with that. I don't think the opportunity was there though, really; neither of those clubs seem to have been properly interested at a price that Juventus would have entertained, thus Man U.

I think Real were pretty interested but United blew them out of the water. If Pogba had wanted it badly enough he'd be a Real Madrid player now.

Looks like Ashley Williams could be going to Everton for £12m. That would have been an absolute steal for us with very little downside.

If he had lived up to his (ridiculously OTT) billing at the Euros then he'd be a Real Madrid player right now. He didn't and was one of the most disappinting big names at the whole thing, so he's gone to the one club stupid/rich/desperate enough to pay the laughable fee Juve wanted and similarly laughable weekly wage he was demanding.

so because man united blew away real madrid that means pogba didn't have the opportunity to go there? please, he could be at any club he wants to if they had the money to pay his fee and wages. real madrid and barcelona don't have some special status where players with no special affinity for them do so for less money. you outbid them and the player is yours especially if the club you end up with is a commercial powerhouse and the most successful in england.

But it's not that they couldn't match United, it's that they didn't want to. Madrid paid pretty much the same amount for Bale 3 years ago and are more than capable of matches United's wage offer too. The fact that they didn't want to pay that means they didn't want him that badly, hence he didn't have the opportunity to go there. I'm guessing they've been scarred a little by the James Rodriguez deal.

Supposedly the reason Real didn't push for it, is because Perez doesn't like Raiola, and wasn't willing to give him the huge agent fee he was asking for.

Real actually dont have anywhere to put him on the field at the moment without getting rid of a starter of theirs and im not sure there is a reason to sacrifice anyone for Pogba at the moment. His effectiveness is very overrated tbh. Even Juventus fans said he's a player who doesnt have a clear position or role and he wasnt a a crucial performer for them.

I think the long and short of it is that neither Real Madrid or Barca felt like wasting a world-record breaking fee on Pogba in the present, all while United threw insane money on Juventus for a player who wasn't even their best midfielder.

Besides, if recent history has taught us anything it's that the Spanish giants will get anyone they want in the end. There's no real difference on their part between paying €150 million for Pogba three years from now and paying €120 million in the present. The only difference is that he will have come along further in his development at that point and might actually improve them.
