I agree - I think players like Lavezzi and Jackson Martinez haven't shown much ambition by going to to China but Pelle's not exactly had a stellar career and he's on the wrong side of 30 now. He's going to end up making more money than players with twice his talent.

I've just checked and apparently he's on 1.8m for Southampton. The man's won the lottery. 😆

It doesn't. Attendance wise they are the best outside europe but even then a lot of matches have relatively empty stadiums. The matches itself in the league bar the top few clubs are pretty uncompetitive although standards have risen dramatically the last year or so with the influx of all these foreign players. When you have Luis Fabiano and Jadson playing even in the 2nd division it helps. The top clubs though even with all the expensive imports are only just about matching the best clubs from Korea and Japan. Jackson Martinez has been a complete flop looking out of his depth even at this level resulting in his club getting knocked out in the group stage of the Champions League.

There are massive corporations paying for all these deals in the background and most of them are state funded. Ever since China's president vow to bring the world cup to them, he has approved of all the big investments going into the local clubs to help local league and footballers standards in one form or another. Guangzhou for instance have Alibaba backing them, which has a higher revenue per quarter than City and PSG's companies put together in a year. Basically their money will never end so it doesn't matter if they don't earn from shirt sales or any other form of normal footballing revenues.

He wouldn't 'need' the money but you can appreciate the lifestyle jump if you increase your income 20 times over. Even allowing for diminishing utilities, he's now one of the best paid athletes in the world. Considering the choice was between this or a few years playing for a midtable club before being completely forgotten, I'd say even you would give an offer like this serious thought.

Well, that 15m better be worth it now that his coach is Felix Magath. Diego Tardelli already complaining on twitter that his training methods are inhumane and a lot of players puked after every session 😆

Doesnt matter. They are all similar cases to Pelle in that, they understand that their level is not at the pinnacle of european game where they could get anywhere similar amounts of money, so at around 30 years of age you just take the final payday. Every "big" player who has moved there is exactly the same profile - not good enough for a big european CL club, age bracket 28+. Just look at the list: Renato Augusto, Burak Yilmaz, Jackson Martinez, Alessandro Diamanti, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Stephane Mbia, Gervinho, Ramires, Jo, Fredy Guarin, Obafemi Martins (the guy is still only 31! 😆 ), Nikica Jelavic, Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse, Asamoah Gyan etc etc and the latest are Hulk and Pelle.

2nd rate players getting paid superstar wages to go play in a 3rd rate league. i would definitely do it. that list shows me that MLS is going to have its work cut out for it attracking players. i imagine MLS would've loved to have folks like Lavezzi, Martinezm Gervinho, Papiss Cisse and Hulk

it's a job. if someone wants to pay you dumb money to do your job, you go there. i wouldn't think twice if i was a Pelle earning 50,000 pounds a week in Europe and being offered 300,000 pounds a week in China. doesn't even make sense to think trophies because at best you're going to be a sub on a team that MIGHT challenge like an Arsenal or an Dortmund.

The other thing is this money has to do them for the rest of their lives. Maybe you get to be a manager some day but even then would you be bothered once you'd earned as much as Pelle will have made? If you really are a top player then yes its a bit of a lack of ambition but why play for a midtable prem team with little or no glory rather than a Chinese team? You can say they already have enough money but I'm sure there are people in the world who would think that of some of us too. You will obviously always want more money if its available for not too much sacrifice.

My favourite story about Magath is from when he was training Wolfsburg. They were doing preseason in Austria and it was almost 30 degrees outside, so Magath cancelled training, told the players he'd take them out for a cup of coffee and ushered them onto the team bus. When the bus stopped at its destination they realised he had failed to mention that the café was at the top of a mountain though. They had to run all the way in the heat. It took almost three hours and the thin mountain air made it impossible to breathe. Several players puked and cried. Grafite collapsed and had to be picked up by an ambulance. Magath himself was running behind them all the way to make sure no one tried to escape.
