Burnwinter Maresca was lining himself up for City this summer. Its obviously made them worse but there was little point persisting with a manager who has one foot out the door. Trying to have so much influence over the manager has been their issue. Looks like they may be figuring that out though with this appointment. Hopefully it turn sours pretty quick.

Its risky for Alonso.. He failed at Madrid, and if he fails at Chelsea, his reputation will take a pretty decent sized hit. Or at least, it will confirm that he has what it takes to be a "mid sized club manager" but not necessarily the top tier (at least not yet). Sort of like Emery. Just a thought..

Burnwinter unfortunately I think he will do well similar to Carrick at Utd this past 5 months. Very likely Chelsea won’t have Europe next year so Alonso can implement his philosophy as it’s easier playing once a week.

Sicario2 He's a good manager. As his experience at Madrid showed he's far from invulnerable to a treacherous and chaotic environment. I'd expect a bright start but I don't see it working out.

Gurgen he probably wants to get going after a tough year in Madrid. And its' not like there are clear opportunities at the biggets clubs. PSG, Bayern, Barca, Arsenal, United, Liverpool all seem quite set. So where should he go?

Whereas if he gets Chelsea back in the CL, which I think is do-able, it'll be viewed as a success and Alonso gets some Premier league managerial experience too.

And even If it all goes to shit he gets a £10m payout (or whatever) and a chance to try again.

Yeah and it's the wrong timing for either, really. Liverpool have fucked their squad and City will have a nearly nailed-on post-Pep slump. So you make a strong point.

Also why just those two? I reckon the Basques will all be hanging round trying to become Arteta's successor at this rate.
