Wow. I was really surprised when I checked Instagram followers as a proxy for younger followers globally:

United 33m
Liverpool 22m
Chelsea 19m
City 16.5m
Arsenal 16.5m
Spurs 6m

These last 10 years have been very costly.

Özil would be second in that list of yours. Instagram followers probably isn't the best indicator for a clubs size

Ozil is a massive entity and Instagram is celebrity-driven. It’s impossible to stay on the platform and only see places, teams, food and non-other human things. The algorithm keeps forcing famous people on you.

You don’t think it’s a useful proxy for relative popularity amongst youth globally? I’m not being scientific here, just a quick view. What’s the biggest issue?

I would say the list is accurate. I'm honestly shocked when I see so many City and Chelsea kids around. They grew up watching them win things while amongst their school discussion we are always seen as the joke, like how we grow up seeing Spurs as bottlers.

We absolutely cannot take another 10 years of shit. 20 years is a long time and we are all mudane

This sounds accurate. Hardcore support will always remain faithful. But it’s the new kids and it’s the variable supporters, the guys who will switch out from football to motor racing or boozing as soon as their team starts losing where we are in trouble. And both still generate revenue. They come to the pubs in their replica kits. And everywhere I travel, United is always strong but Chelsea has really picked up. Knew City was very strong but didn’t know the effect was that big.

It's easy to distort those figures. Even if it were all real people what does it mean if some kid in SEA clicks on Follow on City's page and couple months later does the same for Liverpool. Point being the size of a club can't really be measured that way.

Not sure about anecdotal evidence either. Around here the only EPL shirts you see with any regularity are Arsenal and United, wouldn't say theyre the biggest clubs because of it though.

I would say the Arsenal 'brand' has endured myself. As many if not more matches on Arsenal shown on TV here as of any other club because the idea that we play entertaining football has stuck. One big reason also why Liverpool need to lose and not break our 49 unbeaten record.

Three super-rich Russian oligarchs with close ties to Vladimir Putin have been blacklisted with punishing UK sanctions.
