I also think we need to bring in a sporting director over the next year or so; preferrably someone that Wenger can vouch for. His football knowledge is still pretty much second to none even if his decisions can be questioned. He needs to handpick someone who knows his shit, someone who'll still be here when Arséne decides it's time to leave. It's the only way to avoid a transition that'll end up in absolute disaster. We have zero people with any type of specific football knowledge in the upper hierarchy of the club, and it concerns me a great deal. It's been an issue ever since Dein left.
A quality sporting director would also mean that we'll maintain much of our identity in the future regardless of who the manager is. It means it's less of a big deal if we don't get the appointment right the first time.
Agree with this. While Wenger clearly isn't among the elite when it comes to match day preparation any more, he still knows what a good player looks like and what conditions they need to meet their potential. On that basis, the current board have sensibly let him get on with things regarding player recruitment.
With the average lifespan of managers measured in months rather than years, it becomes even more important to bring in someone who has some kind of vision at the board level.
