i would like to discuss our shape, formation, and how our current players fit into what we are trying to do.
i would conclude that so far, we have played a narrow 4-2-3-1 formation, with coq and cazorla as the 2, alexis, ozil and ramsey as the 3, and either giroud or walcott as the 1. a few players have been moved around, but that is the gist of it. this is the formation a lot of people wanted us to play last year, when we were using that weird 4-1-4-1 formation. however, the 4-2-3-1 has caused a number of issues, as far as i can see:
- cazorla is playing centrally instead of ramsey, and he doesn't have the legs or defensive chops to really play as part of the 2, he is better suited to the middle of the 3, which is also ozil's best position
- ramsey out wide isn't working, obviously
- when walcott plays as the 1, we have no real focal point. for all of giroud's many faults, he at least offers a target and helps with our link up play
- we have no width at all. ramsey and alexis both dart inside whenever they can, leaving our only available width at the fullback spots, which causes a problem because it means we have only 2 CBs and coq to break up counter attacks.
the question is, what is the answer? is it really as simple as dropping cazorla and playing ramsey as part of the 2? is he disciplined enough to play this role? what do we do when coq is out, which it appears he will be for a little while. we do not have anyone that can replicate what he does.
do we play a flat 3 in midfield and try to offer more protection there? do we, gasp, go back to flamteta?
how can we improve our lack of width? should ox be starting over ramsey if wenger is going to stick with cazorla central?
should we be looking to change our formation? maybe play 2 up top and do big man/little man to try and create more matchup issues for opposing centerbacks?
right now, we are way too predictable. all teams need to do is clog the middle of the pitch and we are boned, because our forwards refuse to go wide and create any kind of width at all.
what say you?
