Not sure about the demotion part, but I can think of one instance where this has happened before. They did the same thing with Rob Styles a few years ago. Biggest disaster to ever referee in Premier League. The FA overturned the red card he showed Paul Robinson against Man United (which cost WBA the game). Styles retired a few days later, citing that he didn't feel he had the FA's support as the reason. Let's hope Dean follows his example.
