Disagree about the acting, but perhaps it's the writing. Elliot is totally unconvincing to me.

Yes, that's about it. The first season is a ten episode bagatelle with less to it than a typical high concept short story. After sleepwalking through the second half of season one while doing this move to Darwin, I actually turned it off in disgust during the final episode. The characters are ciphers, the things it wants to explore are adolescent, and it's breathtaking in its lack of grace and substance. There's nothing to it.
