I do think people make a mistake in viewing it exclusively through a modern American lens though. I understand where they come from, and they're not wrong too see the same themes in Trump's rise to power and the GOP's radicalism. But the truth, and the real reason why the story has had such staying power, is that there has never been a time or a society since the book was written where it couldn't be convincingly applied on the present.

I don't know what else to say off the top of my head, but I definitely think you'll be captivated by it. I'm thrilled that Atwood is going to be involved in the writing of a second season. This really should have been big news all around the world. My opinion of Margaret Atwood is that she's well-deserved of a nobel prize before she takes down the sign. I can think of very few authors on her level from the last century.

Finally, thought I was the only one here. That speech of Bryan Cranston about halfway through the season was fucking amazing, so intense. Don't think there are many actors who could pull you in like that, his monologue must've been at least ten minutes in an episode of 50 minutes, that whole scene was insanely captivating.

Not sure how much of an Atwood fan I am (I did love The Blind Assassin, but I haven't really chased her other work beyond The Handmaid's Tale). I reckon I will check out this TV series though.

I took up Sneaky Pete after the recommendations on here and finding out Cranston is in it, albeit in a minor role. He's so awesome.

Seems like it's a good show, but feels like it's missing something at the moment and I feel like I know what's going to happen. Lets see.

Yeah it's worth it Burnsy - the best and most compelling thing I saw on TV this year. It's worth it just for the way it's shot in my opinion.

Just came around finishing the first season of the Man in the High Castle. Safe to say I'm not going to start the second season any time soon 😆

Just started the Patriot. Haven't cringed so much since the first season of David Brent, have to make sure not to overdose on it

Speaking of Black Mirror the new season is brilliant. I don't know how they did it, but they unearthed another San Junipero in USS Callister. This has to be the best tv show in ages. A Twilight Zone for a modern audience.

Agree. I read the book last month and was blown away by the quality of the writing. It felt topical as you, because of Trump and Pence, but as a piece of literature that stands on its own, it’s superlative. She does a great job of building this dystopian future and you can feel freedoms being stolen in every moment. She also uses the first person perspective to great effect to steer the reader through the uncertainty of it all.
I also recently finished the show. I’m glad Atwood consulted. It largely stayed true to the book, of a little more brutal when visualized. And it was beautifully shot as well. Recommend both.

Watched a couple of shows during the holidays

Rellik - was okay, not exactly a new trick to tell a story backwards but here it was nicely done. Couple of good twists and turns here and there, it's basically CSI Miami but good (and British), six episodes was a good length

Game of Silence - not sure how I finished this one, comically bad camerawork and acting and the plot was shit too. Not renewed for a second season unsurprisingly. Was surprised though to hear that its Turkish original had very good ratings and even more that its based on a true story helping to uncover a mass scale abuse at a youth prison in southern Turkey

Patriot - best show I've seen in a long time. Makes you cringe, laugh and feel depressed several times per episode, all tied into a pretty ridiculous plot. Extremely well crafted and beautifully shot, must watch

McMafia - silly name but looks an interesting BBC production so far.
