I don't think that's how it works. Rather than the funniest show winning, it's the best show that is classified as a comedy. Which it has to be, among other genres.

Not that the Emmys can be taken seriously most of the time.

Daz Not that I don't think The Bear is funny, but do you literally think every sitcom is funny? I don't think The Big Bang theory is funny, but it's definitely a comedy.

I think the Bear IS funny, albeit the humour is generally from the gallows (you'd think an Arsenal fan would love it, right?), but I think I agree with your general point Daz. It's not as funny as Succession, for example or as overtly comedic as something like What We Do In The Shadows.

No I don't, but I can see they are intending to be a comedy. I don't see that with the Bear at all (at least not the episodes I watched before I decided it wasn't for me). I've never been interested in watching Big Bang Theory either, and I doubt I'd like it if I did, but I wouldn't be surprised if it managed to get at least one laugh out of me in 6 episodes.
Anyway, my wife is away this weekend so maybe I'll try a couple more episodes of the Bear and see if anything clicks.

I actually think it being classed as a comedy is part of the reason why I felt it was a let down. It’s a drama series. I don’t think they’re trying to be funny any more than shows like The Wire, which actually landed a few hilarious iconic scenes.

It's a dramedy and it's definitely not unintentional.

Binged all of The Bear in the last few weeks and I loved it from the get go. I've never watched any cooking stuff so I just found it really interesting to get into that world. Some of the character arcs and their pay off in season 2 are just fantastic. I love so many of the characters... Peter (my fave), Tina, Richie, Marcus, Uncle Jimmy... they're so great.

I do find the constant talking over each other really hard to take though. The extended flashback family episode in season 2 I found physically painful to watch; I ended up skipping through the really long scene at the start of it.

Fargo season 5 has been excellent so far. Definitely looks like it's the best one season season 1.

goon Interesting! I preferred season 2 to 1, I think it worked really well in depicting some of the events talked about in season 2 - but season 1 was also excellent. How could it not have been, given the acting talent involved?

RocktheCasbah I agree. I'd say season 5 is on par with 3. Extremely well done, but very straight forward for a Fargo series. Never watched season 4 because of what I've heard about it.

Season 4 wasn't great but still very watchable. I didn't watch it until very recently for the same reason. The worst thing about it was the brother. The guy based his acting technique on cartoons.

I really liked season 2 as well, but season 1 was a classic for me. Some of the most unique and well executed characters on any show I've watched. Season 5 reminds me of that in some ways.

goon The sequence when Lorne Malvo goes into that building and executes... everyone? but the camera remains outside was such an original way of shooting (haha) something like that. I'm sure there was something else within the season where I thought, I've never seen this done that way. It was a great season of TV, full of - as you say - great characters.

Yeah it was pretty decent. Though I found the sound quality on some of the dialogue to be really poor which made it hard to hear in parts (no old age jokes thanks).

I watched Boy Swallows Universe too. I've not read the book but found the series to be pretty good overall. It's a bit of a strange one in the sense that much of it feels like a kids movie (though one that addresses some serious themes), but then it's interspersed with some pretty brutal violence. I also found some of the characters to be quite cartoonishly acted (especially the bad guys) but perhaps that was intentional and true to the book? I dunno what it is with Travis Frimmell either; I really liked him in Vikings but every other thing I've seen him in he's come across as a pretty poor actor.

Asterix Not sure how many TV shows have managed to combine references to both Ferris Bueller's Day Off and John Carpenter's The Thing! I was sold immediately. And Jodie Foster just elevates everything, it's great to have her back on screen.

I watched the last 2 episodes of season1 recently too and I have to agree. The final episode was really good (but still no laughs!). Now I have to decide if season 2 is worth me rejoining Disney for another month!

Exactly the same turning point for me. The last 2 to 3 episodes of season 1 were very good.
