MistaT It was a slow start, yeah.
Armstrong doesn't play too much with narrative. The episode's build-up to the Pierce acquisition and the siblings' "everything old is new again" media showdown with Logan was a bit of a plod. In different hands, it could've been done with an in medias res opening, with flashbacks, etc. However, SUCCESSION's never done that much, they prefer their fly on the wall documentary style.
But the reviews out there are fawning way too much to let me think it's actually a lukewarm season as it develops to whatever story arc midpoint the critics could access.
To me, the show's greatest peak to date was the ep where Kendall was about to "get" Logan and then let that waiter drown in the river while the two were on a coke bender. That's the mood I see them heading towards again this season, only it'll be even more horrible.
My prediction is this season will go very big on the story. There will be one or more deaths and horrifying behaviour way beyond business intrigue or egomania. However, it won't end sad. Whatever catharsis they derive from tragedy will be folded back up into the bleakest of big, dark, existential jokes.
Bit bland so far, but the real risk is they overshoot and try to go too big.
