Daz Apple TV+ is quietly becoming a very good platform. Just finished Severance and it's pretty amazing.

Not exactly recommendations since I haven't watched them yet, but I've heard very good things about Pachinko, For All Mankind and Black Bird on there.

QuincyAbeyie I forgot to add that I've been watching Severance too; think I've got one more episode. It really is great and something quite different from other shows. Thanks for those other suggestions though, I'll check them out. I've watched black bird and it was quite good.

Coombs actually I did watch a fair bit of that but stopped before the end (think it might have been because we started watching Last of Us instead). I was quite liking it though so should probably go back and finish it. Cheers mate.

Starblazers was fantastic anime in it's day, which was early 80s.

One of the best spaceships though - the Space Battleship Yamato.

Asterix This was the first one I watched as a small kid, must've been 3 or 4, loved it. That and G FORCE. I think I heard both were shady dubs of more coherent Japanese stories …

I've also watched half of episode 1 of Mel Brooks' History of the World Part 2. It's as silly as you'd expect, with some bad misses, but has some laugh out loud moments too.

I'm pretty sure the original movie ended with a mock trailer for part two which featured Hitler on Ice. Episode 1 of Part Two does indeed feature Hitler on Ice.

Ah yes G Force aka Battle of the Planets -ah roo toot Keop!. Then of course came Astro Boy. Loved all of those. Yes I was reading up on Starblazers and it's an American dub version of an original Japanese series Space Battleship Yamato.

Mirth Monster is one of the best shows I've ever watched. Would recommend.

I'm just dreading having to start a 5-6 season series, I know it's very well regarded.

QuincyAbeyie In the case of Chainsaw Man, there's much to suggest that there's more to it than just that.

I think it's better than your average shounen / isekai rubbish, and has strong themes throughout. It's just still very much stuck with the formulas and tropes of the genre. I still managed to plow through the season in a few sittings - unlike JJK which I dropped midway.

QuincyAbeyie Made in Abyss is very good, but some things there are so disturbing that it's not something I'd lightly recommend to people. So I don't.

I understand the dodgy bits. But having gone through a season - it is indeed very good.

Interesting to see streaming companies move back to a weekly release of their shows. The trend a few years back was to either debut all of them at once, or to drop half the season and then shift to a weekly release.

Have to say that I miss the ability to binge through as I generally don't watch many series, and when I do my mindset is let's rip this. Would love a compromise of 2 episodes per week!

It's very blatantly to do with people subscribing, binging then unsubscribing. I still do this regularly because I rarely watch television, but for example with Disney Plus they've started staggering their high profile "event" series to get more out of me. Also the churn of regularly unsubbing from things eventually means you get caught in the shady "inertia selling" product pattern for services you're not using.

Ultimately I think I'm slowly being driven back to torrenting everything after its run finishes, seems to still be the lowest effort solution.

If you can draw out the release of new content over the space of 2-3 months I guess you don't need to release as much new content. Also prevents people who want to see things right away from being able to subscribe for just one month unless they wait until all episodes are out.

I do think it actually takes away from shows though and think the whole format is dated.

I remember reading about the new Battlestar Galactica reboot and how they were going to mix it up. I'm surprised no one else has thought to do this:

“For me it was like let’s get in there and tell the right story and it will tell us how many episodes,” Esmail explained to Collider. “We may dump three episodes in a row because it’s a three-episode-long battle sequence that needs to be dropped in a row even though they’re three signifying chapters, and maybe each chapter is switching a point of view within that battle sequence. There may be a 20-minute episode that’s the backstory of one of the characters that gets dropped right after that…

“So I can’t tell you the number of episodes, but it’s also kind of a little meaningless because I think we’re gonna look at it as sort of like a spider web where we can plot and point and say, ‘Well this isn’t chronologically after episode 1 or episode 2, it’s the backstory of someone, but let’s release that so audiences can check that out if they want or they can just jump into the battle sequence’. We’re really gonna experiment with form in that way, and again I think with a property like Battlestar it lends to that.”

The reason they are doing the weekly drops of content is simple. The platform has tons of content. Users have shown capacity to binge several hours of content in a single weekend. So they’re hoping that they can get you to stay on platform all weekend and watch their other material. That way you watch more content through the year, get attached to more shows, feel more compelled to stick to that platform. It depends what your viewing habits are. Netflix, for example, has tons of cheap trashy TV, so for people who like that genre, this strategy works really well. For Apple or Amazon, content runs out very quickly.

Well said goon on the reasons (financial, sticker user base) but also the cost (users not as drawn in). Alongside Battlestar Galactica, I would shout out the Sabrina series (the wife made me watch it, I swear!) for having a novel release approach in mixing seasons with one off longer episodes (almost movies).

Regarding The Last of Us finale

I really didn't think the hospital scene worked as well as in the game. In the game I killed dozens of zombies, Fedra agents and raiders before that point, but in the TV show where every fight was a slugfest and every single kill was a massive struggle, didn't it feel very odd how he was able to go on that final rampage? I don't know, I thought it felt out of place, unlike in the game.

Still a very good series, and looking forward to see how people will react to season 2.

QuincyAbeyie I haven't played the game and the scene you're talking about was really quite shocking, even after what we've seen the character be capable of. I was quite confronted by it. I understand the character development behind it, but was still uncomfortably shocked.
