Oh, What We Do In The Shadows is an absolute hoot- for me much, much better than the film version.

Also, I'd say The Americans is right up there with the best shows of the last twenty years - and one, without giving away anything, that like Better Call Saul, really sticks the landing. Keri Russell & Matthew Rhys are superb.

Watched half a dozen episodes of The Americans couple years ago after reading rave reviews but didn't really do anything for me.

It's worth going back and persevering at least till the end of the first season. I felt exactly the same as you after half a season and stopped watching, my missus (having carried on with it) persuaded me to have another look. I did and it kind of took off for me not long after.

Of course, it also depends what you're into.

I probably stopped around the same time as you having just checked some of the plot. I'll give it another try then, can only assume your opinions on TV shows are more relatable/reliable than your MK Ultra views 🙂

It's a while ago now and I remember at least 1 season I didn't enjoy, but overall it's very good. RtC is right on it sticking the landing too, really well done.

Can see why it wouldn't be to everyone's liking though.

I don’t mind the time jump in The Targaryen show. But at least slow it down and set up the various older characters to heighten the stakes so that there is payoff when significant events occur. Unless what appear to be significant events will turn out to be mere footnotes in the broader arc.

They also don't seem to have bothered ageing some of the adult characters either which makes the time jump a bit unconvincing.

i don't mind the adults not ageing so much. a lot of people think i'm 10 years younger. it's just the rushed storytelling that grates. they could've split the season into 2 parts. part 1 which deals with the older teenage years of Rhaenyra, and then part 2 which is the 10 year jump. but spend a bit of time building depth in each of these periods rather than being light touch. you can always use flash backs and collapse earlier events into a single time period.

Agree with that. They aged the characters who were kids and would look noticeably older. Take a look at BCS for example, nobody cares that Mike looks older in the prequel.

I did have some issues with the latest episode.

[spoiler]1. Rhaenyra in particular seems like a totally different character. This is fine since she's been through a lot, but becomes jarring when the entire transformation has happened off-screen between episode 5 and 6 and happens together with the change in actress. For Alicent they used episode 5 to start her journey towards the character she is now, and it worked better for her.

Are they going to explain why Harwin is kicked out for punching Criston, while Criston apparently got away with killing Joffrey? I'm sure there's an explanation but I'd rather they not just brush past it.
Rhaenyra seemed like a smart, although stubborn, character. The short moments we got between her and Harwin wasn't enough to show that they had such a strong bond that she decided to have kids with a white man with dark hair, knowing everyone would see through it. Didn't she and her husband whose name I've forgotten make a deal in episode 5 to first have a child together to fulfill their duty and then do whatever they wanted after?[/spoiler]

potentially that the king's guard are a law unto themselves. this might be similar to how the City Watch wreak havoc in episode 1.
this is just bad adaptation that they expect the viewer to look past. 😆 i suspect in the book there is still an issue around hair colour of the children, but not the race. (a bit like Joffrey in GoT). maybe book readers can comment.

This is my feeling on it. They don't seem to want to sit with the characters, let them breath, let us get to know them. Instead this series is just a series of events that are leading up to the main story. I get that they're working with thin source material but I think they could have fleshed it out a bit. Quincys point number 1 is spot on about IMO. Its not so much the change of actors but the change in the characters that just happened. Sure I can fill in the blanks to get from a to b but its a lot less satisfying than watching it get from a to b.

Except in BCS all of the carry-over actors had aged so it didn't jar. I mean, they can afford to have people flying on cgi dragons but they can't be bothered putting some grey streaks and a wrinkle or two on the adult characters (other than the king)?

[spoiler]yeah as I understand house velaryon aren't black in the books, but the show runners couldn't be arsed changing the story to suit, so expect the viewer to overlook what appears to be egregiously bad judgement by rhaenyra and harwin[/spoiler]
