Yeah, Joe's character could be a lot more interesting if it was portrayed better considering the whole good vs.evil path thing he's got going on. Instead you just think of him as 'the other man'. The others are mostly excellent though.

Do you not think Juliana is a bit of a blank? We know so little about her compared to Frank, she's just there in the middle of everything being bland. They need to flesh her character out, give her some ticks.

I reckon Juliana and Joe could get more interesting mind you, particularly if what happens in the film actually comes to pass...

Now that the forum is back I can finally say that when I asked if The Leftovers was slow, I actually meant Rectify. Should I binge watch Rectify?!

I think you should take your time watching Rectify. It's not the kind of show you want to burn through too fast. The slow pacing is an important part of the aesthetic.

Trying to watch the new X-Files so it reinvigorates me to finish all the old ones.

Hoping it doesn't make me jaded by being a shitty new version....

black sails is pretty good. some characters and threads are a tad bland, but now blackbeard aka titus pullo is on the scene it looks like business is about to pick up

I thought the first episode on new X Files was pretty poor. But I was excited that they mentioned an abduction in Victoria which is near where I live. Pretty cool.

I'm going through the old X files at a decent enough pace. Mostly a good watch, I'd say. I'd totally forgotten how much the show made fun of itself!

The second episode of X Files "season ten" was an improvement. I'm enjoying it.

What I like the most about it is that I had no real idea what the content, secondary characters, subject matter or trajectory of this episode would be.

If we're going to have so many six season dramas, they need to indulge in a bit more experimentation to keep us guessing.

The old X-files really went to shit in the last couple of seasons after Duchovny left, maybe before, I don't remember, but it a huge nosedive. The finele was shit too.

Puts me off from watching it over.

rick and morty is the best animated show i've seen in ages. if you're not a fan by the end of episode 5, its probably not your cuppa

strike back is excellent. hollywood-level action set pieces, and 2 likeable leads. if you like banshee you'll like strike back.

The finale made me sick with irritation at the time. Talk about a damp squib.

To be clear I don't think the new X-Files is great, but it's nice to have a break from pure serial drama without moving into comedy. I felt the same way about the original season of Hannibal, but I've barely been able to watch season three of that.

Have just finished both seasons of Mozart in the Jungle. It's about a new conductor coming to the New York Symphony and the goings on amongst the musicians and management. Very enjoyable comedy drama. Gael Garcia Bernal is the new conductor and is fantastic. He was in Y Tu Mama Tambien years ago which is a great movie. Saffron Burrows is a cellist and is yummy. The timpani player deals soft drugs. Jason Schwatzmann crops up as a podcaster. Malcolm McDowell is fantastic as the acerbic outgoing conductor. And Bernadette Peters does her thing, but you have to wait for Season 2 for her to sing, which she does only once.

Also watched the first episode of War and Peace. I love classics but have never read it, so will wait until the TV series is over. Very good so far, as you'd expect from Andrew Davies.

I watched the first two episodes of War And Peace too a while back, but I stopped because I happen to love the book and I didn't want the anachronisms of this show to override my recollection of it (it's simply out of the question to reread it a second time). I saw the filmatisation described as "more Austen than Tolstoy", which is actually a great way to summarise it (then again, Davies's version of Pride & Prejudice was more Davies than Austen too): http://www.economist.com/blogs/prospero/2016/02/television-adaptations

In contrast to that review I don't see it as a fundamentally bad thing though. Tolstoy doesn't really work in the medium of film or television, and especially not War And Peace. Common sense would tell you that you can't adapt one of the longest and most infamously dense works in modern literature into a 6-hour drama without missing a lot of points and finding the need to invent new ones to take their place. I assume that people who really want to experience the strengths of any author would seek him out in his true medium.
