Well thats exactly right Klaus, injuries are not a terrible unforeseen catastrophe that is visited on us as some sort of divine retribution, no they're normal occupational risks that you can be sure will happen every season with monotonous regularity.

Can you imagine him going into a season with just 2 extra players as cover in midfield?

They don't have to be of international quality, but any top club that's chasing trophies on 4 fronts should have 5 decent center half's.

I feel like all you need is 1.5 top quality players per position. That's 3 quality CBs, 3 quality FBs, 3 quality central midfielders, and 6 quality AMs and strikers. Garnish with recent Academy grads and journeymen. If you have that covered, your season should progress swimmingly.

Except that no one does. United have four, out of which two are good and two are mediocre. Chelsea have two central defenders and a rightback as their only backup. There's nothing wrong with us depth wise. The problem is that Squillaci, who is no more than "decent" as you put it, is playing more than he should because of injuries to others.

Well another centreback would definitely derisk us. We've seen too many a season go down the pan cos our squad has been too stretched/hasn't received that new player shot in the arm when needed

We do need another centreback if Vermaelen really is out for the season. But we didn't need one before that happened.

Of course we need a centreback if our best one is out for the entire season. We don't need five centrebacks in the squad plus Song, though. We have no room for it. If we sign someone in january another one (which is likely to be Squillaci) will leave in the summer.
