Wenger definitely said in his pre-match press conference for the Leeds game, that Vermaelen had reacted well to training, that there was no pain in his Achilles - which was the persistent, unexplained problem stopping him from returning - and that he expected him to return to the team "very quickly".
So James is right, something must have changed because Wenger's tone is very different in that Arsenal.com report. Plus, despite what some of you think of John Cross, I can't see why he'd just completely make something up. He's not a moron, and he knows he'd get endless abuse for it on Twitter and everywhere else.
