The mind-twisting logic in this thread, applied to shin pads.

One of the world's best and winningest midfielders is in fact a bad player, because he wears shin pads.
A player wearing shin pads means he's avoiding tackles.
Wearing shin pads means you're not focused on playing well, because you're shin-obsessed.
A successful player who's had a shin fracture should retire for the benefit of his family instead of risking his shins, padded or otherwise.

Players who wear shin pads are a bunch of pussies I reckon.

Shin pads are regulated safety equipment that all players must wear in official games-They have absolutely no relevance in this discussion.
They were introduced are as red herring to deliberately misinterpret what I have stated and muddy the waters, and I'm very surprised that you of all people were sucked in by it.

I didn't see anyone else mention shin pads, must have missed it. It's an obvious and legitimate comparison prompted by witnessing the plainly silly panic around Cech's helmet in this thread. 🙂

Anything but admit that the use of protective equipment in football, whether it's shin pads, or Fabregas wearing a mask to keep his fractured face in place, or Cech's helmet, is modest, sensible and driven by practical need.

I do think Biggus has made some fairly decent points here. If Cechs head is still so fragile then Biggus is right he probably shouldn't be playing at all.

As I've said I don't think he really needs the helmet any more. It just doesn't bother me as much as it does biggus as I see it as a money issue not a psychological one.

Anyway back to Cech, the fuss being created over his helmet wearing Is ludicrous.
The pseudo psychology being employed In the discussion and the notion that he should quit football for the sake of his family Is nonsense.

Moved all the Cech posts from the pre-season thread.

The discussion was sparked by the following comments on photos of Cech in training:

Why the fuck is he wearing his silly hat at training, is he expecting many challenges from Diaby?

A goalkeeper being concerned about collisions in training never mind during a game is.......Not good.

Maradonna wore 2 sets of shinpads one for his shins, one set backwards for his calf's.

It's probably difficult to be exact about how much pressure his skull can take without killing him. For that reason he'll wear the helmet.

Its a nonsensical comparison, shins are vulnerable to accidental contact during normal play, heads are not- Any contact with them is normally a foul.
Shin pads are mandatory, helmets face masks sports bras etc are not and it goes without saying that as they inhibit players abilities so they are discarded after use.

If you endorse increased protective equipment in football you understand that you are committed to a course that will turn the game into a joke sport like cricket or Grid Iron don't you.....

Absolute cobblers. It's one player wearing a helmet, on medical advice, with zero indication that it's about to become commonplace.

I think some of you blokes might've had a skull fracture or two you're not telling us about to be honest. 🙂

Accepting that it's not a problem that Cech chooses/ needs to wear a helmet is not endorsing or committing to a course that will turn the game into a joke sport.

Assuming this isn't about sponsorship -

His head isn't 'fragile' but clearly through his own medical history there is a valid reason for him to be concerned about another blow at the exact same spot that he had his last injury because it would lead, presumably, to a very complicated and risky medical situation.

Why on earth should Cech considering retiring when the alternative would be to just wear a god damn helmet? Of course it would be OTT if all goalkeepers decided to do so with no history of injury but in exceptional situations I don't see why a footballer can't do as he liked as long as he does not gain an advantage on the pitch.

I bet you guys would have had Edgar Davids retire instead of wearing protective glasses. 😆

Given that the original comments referred to the helmet as a "silly hat" It Is clear to me that the motivation for the comment was not concern.
It was meant as ridicule and the subsequent comment that a player wearing a helmet In training was "not good...." also shows an Intent to undermine Cech.
The Insinuation Is that Cech Is fundamentally flawed and cannot be trusted.

I don't want to give the impression that I'm down on Cech, but just as most of us would prefer a big strong box to box midfielder to a small strong box to box one- So most of us would prefer a top class goalkeeper without previous injury baggage to one with it.
