I think it's obvious that he is. He has a lot more upside as a footballer when he doesn't score or assist though.

He was an inconsistent goalscorer. Which is OK as a midfielder but not as a forward who isn't good at anything else.
Has he really developed since being at Dortmund? Crazy pace but he does come across as a pace merchant with inconsistent finishing. Then again I haven't really watched much of Dortmund recently.
He's had a good development at Dortmund, far from the pure pace merchant he was in his earlier days. He's eerily similar to Walcott in a lot of things - average on the ball, ridiculously fast, very good finisher too. He also started his season at RW and finished it up front and unfortunately he's also not a real striker, he'll get you goals but his game with his back to goal is nonexistent. I'd still take him and throw him on the bench just to spite the fucking Dortmund plastics who were talking about how Arsenal was a stepdown from Dortmund.
we should aim higher
we should bid £60m for aguero
Don't think there's any chance wenger is interested
22m for Bacca, 29m for Aubameyang or 33m for Benteke?
Bacca easily. No contest

Rather take a shot on Jovetic, Vietto, or Berardi or pay over the odds for Benzema.
Jovetic's turning 26 this year with consistent injury problems and a best ever tally of 14 goals.
The latter two are fine talents.
Isn't Vietto Atletico bound? Shame, he could have been a great signing for us, especially at that price touted.
so atletico are getting martinez and vietto? pretty good business for them
Jovetic was very promising at one stage but he plays like Mario Balotelli now.
Vietto has signed for Atleti, yeah. Jovetic heading back to Serie A.

Juve?

Benteke. Similar scoring records but Benteke is PL proven and 4 years younger. Looks like a step up to a big team could see him get even better too.
I'm with qwiss on this one.
I like Benteke but he's got the same limitations as Giroud.
What, lack of pace? Benteke has never look particularly slow to me.
Lack of pace and technically still quite inconsistent. Arguably a better finisher though.
Maybe I just haven't watched him as much as you have.
Benteke is a sprinter compared to Giroud IMO.
Now why am I not surprised?
Hehe. IMO Giroud is a better footballer than Benteke, but he is certainly not even close to being as fast as him.
My thoughts as well. I don't remember Benteke as being a slow player either. Maybe it's something GM has noticed more.
He's certainly not a fast player. Very slow off the mark because he's a big bloke. He can be quite lumbering at times.
Exactly, we'll still be playing the ball to feet or to his head if we want to get the best out of Benteke.
edit: For the record, I've wishlisted Benteke in the past, he's a very promising striker but we need someone more established.
Yeah. Had we signed Benteke or Lukaku instead of Welbeck I would have been more than ok with that. At this point though we need a player significantly better than Giroud IMO. If we can't get that, I wouldn't bother with the number 9 position and wish for us to sign a top class wide forward instead.
Its funny how people look at Benteke and think "he's big, he must be slow". He's a similar height to Henry.
In fairness, they are built very differently. Benteke is a tank.
He is slow.

He's slow because he couldn't run in behind a defence if we asked him to.
I've not made any reference to his height or used that as basis for my judgement - why would I? Ronaldo, Strurridge, Welbeck, Aubameyang and - like you said - Henry are all 6ft plus and would leave Benteke eating their dust.
Not getting into the height argument, but I think Benteke is pretty pacy too. He's a bit like Sol Campbell in that sense. Guys who are built like them shouldn't be that fast, but I guess no one told them. Lukaku is the same. Built like a brick shithouse but can still outrun most opponents. It must be a Belgian thing.
He's not bad when he gets up and running, but he's slow off be mark. And that's what counts most of the time.
Bentekkers is fast, don't know what you lads are smoking. He's seriously athletic.
Ricky1985 wrote:He's not bad when he gets up and running, but he's slow off be mark. And that's what counts most of the time.
I dunno. I haven't seen any stats, but my gut feeling is that he's pretty explosive which is why he's so predatory in the box. It's moot either way I guess, he's not a patch on Aubameyang.
Personally I'm loving the hypocrisy of some suggesting Welbeck "deserves" another chance while having no problems with Ospina far better in his position is being shoved out of the club.
Ricky1985 wrote:He is slow.
Fast enough and intelligent enough to get on the end of through balls.
Giroud and Welbeck have one or the other IMO.
Most strikers these days to more beyond poaching.
The fact is there's only a very few players like that now say a Hernandez.
Benteke's got good feet too.
Yes yes G89 we're all illogical, absurd thinking hypocrites who live in la la land on here. Why, with your superior intellect, do you tolerate us peasants?
Who the fuck are "people"!? Quote the individuals that say this stuff or just fuck off. Which individual person has said "Welbeck deserves another chance but Ospina can go because he's not good enough"? Who's said Benzema is available?
It's like you take an almagamation of various different opinions you read on this site and elsewhere on the Internet and attribute it to a single figure, who you then rage against. Stop it!
