Very close. The possible reasons for it not working out is because 'allegedly' United didn't want to cough up another 5m to meet his release clause and/or Pedro was put off by van Gaal's management style.
I guess it just speaks to how unattractive United are to potential players now. Despite being a big name, van Gaal doesn't seem like a very appealing manager.
