Absolutely devastating way to lose. Thought we were the better team in the second half and looked more likely to score. I guess it's a relief that it didn't have to be penalties this time.

Dreadful refereeing, almost makes me appreciate Mike Riley's EPL mafia. Japan's pen was bad enough but that England dive was just embarrassing.

I thought Japan's pen continued into the box and it was pretty difficult in real time for the ref to spot it.

England's pen was correct, her boots got stepped and almost fell out. It's the way she fell that made it look ridiculous but it's definitely a pen.

I disagree, her boots were stepped on (didn't see it the first time to be honest) but she reflexively readjusted her leg quickly enough, then decided to fall over. Depends on how you define things like that but for me that's a dive. The shove for Japan's pen also came well before she reached the box.

I haven't seen the incident, but whether she dived or not after the fact is largely irrelevant. Was stepping on her boot a foul? If so, it's a penalty.

It was to the extent her boot came out. It was definitely a penalty and a great spot by the ref.

Fair enough, I've rewatched it again and agree with your assessment - she couldn't have continued walking with her foot hanging out of the boot, in this case she was 'right' to tumble to the ground.

I think the writer of the article has it spot on. The reactions here ARE sound, but unfortunately the British press are absolute cretins when it comes to the men's game. They stoke that fire, and then average, stupid Joe follows. Beckham was booed up and down the country for years ffs! How is that a 'normal' reaction?

I think that people aren't angry simply because they don't care. Likewise, people wouldn't be overjoyed if they had won the cup either. It's completely and utterly unimportant and irrelevant to the vast majority of football fans.

Those who comment on this obviously care enough at least to comment. Her point is fair IMO that the way English, male players are treated is waaaaaay over the top. It certainly doesn't help anyone to perform better anyway, knowing that if you make a big mistake you are going to be crucified when you get home.

Turns out that shooting was most likely drug related rather than football related.
