We need to cut the squad. We can replace up to 4 forwards this summer with Cavani or Benzema alone. Midfield, we can dump 2 or 3 midfielders and bring in Schniederlin. I'm glad we have depth, but we overdid it. At least we have assets that in conjunction with the regular transfer budget can be turned into 2 good starters

We can't lose depth Claud, thats crazy. It was the lack of quality depth that fucked us over at the start of the season. We still need a genuine alternative for Giroud whether thats someone significantly better or someone to really challenge him. We need another proper wide forward because Theo and Ox are injured so often. We need an alternative to Coquelin.

We can lose plenty of 'squad depth' that we don't use though and replace it with players who are actually good. Look at Rosicky for instance - it doesn't matter whether we have five, ten or fifteen injuries. He's still not getting a game. A better player would have. I'd cut down the numbers heavily if it meant more quality. Who cares if we have four strikers when three of them are Welbeck, Sanogo and Akpom?

I wouldn't call players who are out on loan "squad depth".

Atletico have reportedly been knocked back by Chelski in their attempt to bring Felipe Luis back to Spain, and so Monreal heads the list of other potential targets.

I'd sell him to them; decent player, had a good season, but not really that much better than a fully fit Kieran Gibbs and would give us the opportunity to add some quality in the position. Darmian from Torino would be very nice or maybe a really talented youngster to challenge Gibbs.

Dunno mate, Monreal in recent months has looked a lot better than Gibbs ever has for us. Problem with Gibbs is you can count the top performances in recent years probably on one hand.

What?

Darmian would be a downgrade on Monreal. Not much better than a fully fit Gibbs is laughable in current context.

Think Monreal is held in a little too high esteem personally. He's a decent player but he's nothing special.

Don't think either are good enough to start for us long term. Monreal is 29 and Gibbs is homegrown - if Atletico offer us what we paid for him, or thereabouts, surely we take it before he starts to decline and get someone better for Gibbs to challenge (sit behind)?

Maybe they aren't squad depth in the sense that we can use them, but they still affect the squad makeup and our transfer movement. They belong to the club because Wenger believes in them and wants them here. He has gambled heavily on both Welbeck and Sanogo in the last two seasons and it has backfired. We sent Sanogo out on loan in January when we only had one fully fit striker. We would not have done that if there had been a better player in his place.

Agree to some extent, Ricky. I think Monreal is a naturally talented footballer. He's easily the best we have for the position. He's a class or two above someone like Gibbs technically, and that's why he succeeds despite having some obvious flaws. I don't think it's difficult to find a younger and better leftback though.

If Wenger were ruthless, Gibbs' ass would be out the door this summer while we picked up a new starter (Coentrao maybe?). And then in two or three years Monreal would be gone too in favour of some younger talent.

A lot of over rating on Monreal going on here as per usual.

Streets ahead of Gibbs at least and we have a superb track record with him in the team. He just fits right in.

He certainly isn't 'streets ahead' of Gibbs. He has had the slightly better season, but Gibbs has by and large had a good season as well. We have two good, but not spectacular, left backs. Let's not pretend that Monreal has been all that either; we don't need to go further back than the Swansea game for proof of that.
