We also need to be fair to Emery. He's not Pep with an unlimited budget. He's been given some 40m pounds which is in the hands of Raul and gang who have taken up to the first week of July to sign one Brazilian teenager and a French kid who we can't touch til next year. Emery must be shitting himself right now.
These guys delivered nothing in January bar a 4m pound loan player and now they've delivered nothing again with half the summer gone. Why should he play nursery teacher when his job could be gone with a rough start in September and will most certainly be gone if he ends in 5th again.
Because I'm assuming a big part of his job spec is to successfully integrate young players into the side? The alternative is that you continue to play the likes of Mustafi.
It's a good point though and ultimately it's why it should be out of Emery's hands. In the ideal world you have someone (like Edu?), who'd make squad building decisions for the long term. The head coach would then have to work around what he has, and if he decides to marginalise young prospects for short term gains, it will ultimately count against him when it comes to the decision of whether or not to renew.
but if a guy comes in on a short term contract as he has, and is under pressure, then there is actually no real incentive for him to prioritise building youth.
go back to last season. we had a nice system coming along where we were building from the back. we lost a couple of games. and then we blew it all up, re-integrated Ozil and co and started winning again in the most pragmatic way. that's a great example of Emery being realistic and focusing on the short term.
he needs to have the both the money to bring in superstars and the leeway to allow young players to fail to make things work. if the right conditions aren't in place, the best route is to keep extracting what we can from Mkhi, Xhaka, Mustafi, Ozil
