No one is saying that the season was positive... we're just saying that we weren't far off in the end.

As I said, at this point, you're just moaning about last season, which we all get but you can't pretend we're way off being competitive because the demonstrable facts show otherwise.

He’s been doing light training since before the end of previous season. Should still miss the start of the season though for full fitness. It’s encouraging though.

Our current side is a 3-time Europa League spot champion. Unless we add some serious new dimensions to it, our best hope will once again come through winning the actual competition.

As long as Mustafi, Xhaka and current day Ozil comprise the spine of this team, we are truly fucked and the season is a write off.

Mustafi and current day Ozil do not comprise the spine of this team and my expectations are low (5th/6th) so i do not think we are fucked at all.

As for Holding, am i the only one who thinks he is getting overrated since he got injured?
Sure he is a good player and did well when in the team but that was not for an extended period (2/3 months) and i don't think we would've done as well if Papa had been the one out of the team from December. He also had a good patch a few years back before falling off badly.

I mean you can suppose as much as you want but the facts clearly don't tally with what you're saying because even with all these problems, we were close. So given that, I'm prepared to wait and see what we do this summer before getting carried away with nihilism. 2-3 well placed signings could make a significant impact on improving the squad and our performance.

Again, I am fully aware of our flaws both on the pitch and off it but I don't see enough actual evidence (other than the fear-mongering going on) that things are as catastrophic as some are making out.

Indeed, the facts are that we were close, but the facts also are that we didn't qualify. It's definitely not catastrophic, as people tend to forget that there are 45 professional teams below us and only 4 in front. There is far greater scope for us to fall down than there is to climb up. So it always makes me laugh when people think that things can't possibly get worse. I am content with where we are as I can't see us surpass the teams ahead of us in our current state. Our best hope is that the cyclical gods show mercy and in 10 years time our rivals have bombed, whilst our prudence has positioned ourselves ahead of the pack. We haven't won a title in almost 15 years and aside from a few seasons, also have failed to be competitive. If you haven't accepted our fate yet, then god help you (not you specifically, talking generally here).

Nice to dream, but how might out prudence help us in any way in the long term? The landscape is likely to get more and more barmy.

Anyway, fuck enduring another 10 years of no ambition. I'd rather take up watching netball than bear out more years of self-sabotage.

We were fighting a Spurs side resting players for UCL run and a Chelsea side in turmoil whose players are not playing for Sarri. And their last 8 matches had 2 or 3 matches against the top 6 while we have a few easily winnable home matches and some tricky away matches. And we still finished outside top 4, lost Ramsey and have some players who is even more past their peak this coming season. You could think of the big picture, or you can just say the table don't like and try to think we are only 1 point away top 4 and we are very close.

The Napoli and Valencia ties were just as crucial to us and had just as big an impact on our league form as Man City and Ajax were to Spurs.

The reality is that Elneny really is the least of our problems. Doesn't cost much, doesn't complain. Great that we're replacing his minutes with Willock but hope there is a plan in place to shift the more costly dross.

I agree a non-playing player doesn't directly affect the team however when you factor in that he is blocking a place of a replacement and/or a youngster, the opportunity cost is high.
It's also unlikely for a player with no talent, raking in a decent weekly wage, to complain.
