Laughable. He's a terrible left back these days. Even as a centreback he's pretty clueless in everything except front foot defending.

I love Nacho but he's regressed badly this season. Really struggles to get up and down, can't cope with anyone that has a bit of pace and clearly doesn't have the know how to deal with his physical decline. Classic case of a player we should be letting go.

Our best defence has been Sok-Kos-Mon this season, he’s the only defender we have who knows how to play out from the back.

Our defence is awful and Monreal is a big part of that.

I've been a huge fan of Monreal, but it's clearly time to move on.

Monreal should only be kept as a backup if we are persisting with a back 3 which I rather not if we have the money to build a back 4

The talk of deals being offered to Monreal and Welbeck are IMO a clear indication that we lack the determination to undertake the full rebuild that needs to be done, and that we are not going to make available the funding to be able to do so.

It will be very interesting to see how TH go with their new stadium cost blowing out. LFC blinked when it cam to their own rebuild of their stadium, but they're spending to ensure that their product keeps the supporters and sponsors satisfied to part with their money.

They are potentially a realization that you need a team. It’s cheaper to offer two 2 year deals (eg) to your squad players than spend transfer fees on them. Save transfer fees for the guys who go to the front of the squad. This could just be smart squad building

Claude - partly agree with you, but I would rather play Nelson for the 10 games a season that Welbeck is required, especially with his injury track record across clubs. No guarantee he will even be available for the 10 games where he is needed. Same with Monreal - would rather see Zach Medley given those games. Or Willock over Elneny. At least there's a 10% chance that one of those 3 will genuinely rise to the level of a first team player and the others can remain squad players.

Why not have both? This team lacked options. Nelson probably only costs 1,5 - 2m pounds a year and provides great optionality if he works out. Then you can use Welbeck as depth or even sell him to a mid table now that he’s contracted

Going out and paying a transfer fee for a Welbeck-type payer, on the other hand, be worrying.

In an ideal world, I would agree. However, there are two considerations. I think one is that if a Welbeck-type backup exists, Emery will play him instead of Nelson (case in point being Elneny), which creates issues around Nelson's development and also overall happiness at the club (could potentially lead him to move away, etc.). Secondly, those wages could come in handy to increase our transfer budget as well (which is constrained I would assume by both capital expenditure and opex limitations).

Emery played Holding and prefers AMN to Jenkinson and Lichsteiner. He also starts Guendouzi. I do not buy that he would not give Nelson a chance.
And while the 5m for for Welbeck would come in handy for transfer budget, at the end of the day, you still need to fill squad. So now, you need to bring in Nelson AND another kid somewhere else probably

Welbeck has to go. It took him a really long time to come back from his previous ACL injury. He was legitmately useless for a year, maybe 18 months after returning. He couldn't sprint properly or turn sharply: His whole game was thrown off. He was very good in the final couple of months of last season and generally good until he got injured this season. He looked quick and sharp again and could be relied upon out wide or up front. A good player that has been missed as much as any recently.

That said, he suffered a serious break of his ankle: We don't have the year he will need to get back up to speed again before he has the same utility. Danny absolutely has to go.

Welbeck is exactly the sort of player that needs to make way for younger players. It's not to say you don't lose something by doing so, but if you really want to invest in youth, plan for the future and free up funds for recruiting for the first XI, then he's the perfect example of the sort of player you have to sacrifice.

Hes got terrible permenant damage in that knee wouldn't be surprised if he retires soonish.

We don't need to replace Welbeck with a signing. Just give Nelson and Nketiah more minutes. He's exactly the sort of player we should let go of. He's always injured too, whats the point in back up players who can't be relied on to be available when needed?

More I think of it, yes. Agree, Qs, we have Nketiah, so get rid. I’ve always said we should release injury prone players. So Wilshere, Ramsey, Walcott, Welbeck all fall in this category.

We have to look at how effectively we spend our dollars. That means reducing

money spent on players on injury table
money spent on relatively expensive players riding the bench

Not sure the interest is actually there (not at £60m or £70m anyway), but I'm curious to see how many would sell if it were.

Personally, I would. He's a very good player and I think he's good enough to lead the line and get the necessary goals for a Champions League club. However, having both Lacazette and Aubameyang is not viable unless they're going to play together, and I don't think playing 2 strikers is going to work if we want a balanced team.

That said, it would depend on what we could do with the money. If we could send it to Lille and receive a Nicola Pepe in 3-5 working days, I'd do it for sure.

The team needs better balance, and a good wide forward isn't going to come cheap.

Sell in a heartbeat. Laca has improved a lot here, but he's a Giroud level player who's turning 28 in three weeks. One more season and all his value is gone, and what he currently does on the pitch is not worth €70 million.

That money could help us compete for Jovic, or maybe even Piatek if Milan keep stumbling. Or we could use a chunk of it to grab a big talent like Alexander Isak and futureproof the team. We have two aging strikers right now in a sport where few of them stay sharp beyond 30. Almost all of Lacazette's capabilities are based on his workrate too. We've already seen what happened to Sanchez when he slowed down.
