Anyway, top 10 in the world in reference to goalkeeping is the equivalent of a top 10 in the world right back-doesn't have much value as the quality of players in these positions has declined so much in the last decade.

It's just seems getting excited over the potential signing of Cech seems like getting excited for the sake of it as there no Arsenal escapism left to offer at the moment.

Since I'm bored and curious, which 5 current PL keepers are better than Cech?

Also I think a 26 year old Szcesny in 1year/18 months will better too.

Cech v PSG away 2014. Sorry, I cannot get over his errors in that game (he was on the decline way before that.....as far back as Euro 2008 ).

Us signing Cech is the same as us now signing Torres as our number one striker.

Hart, Lloris and especially Forster are definitely worse keepers than Cech. All have made horrendous errors in a past few seasons. Hart was even dropped for a while.

Cech's a great signing, but I definitely don't see lots of people losing their minds over him. Why do people keep coming in this thread and asking everyone to calm down from their moderate levels of excitement? It's bizarre.

A whole lot of nonsense. Chelsea fans voted Cech as their best player in 2010-2011 and he was the MOTM in the CL final win against Bayern. He was obviously not on the decline since 2008 no matter how many times you say it.

He did have a sub par season in 2013/2014 but nothing close to the errors that Hart, Lloris and Szcesney have had. He may or maybe not work out for us but let's not change history now.

Cech in my humble opinion had looked less intimidating for a few seasons even before he was replaced. But that does not mean
1) he isn't a top quality keeper,
2) that it's a permanent decline. This phase also coincided with Jose's absence and a less intimidating Chelsea generally. It could have something to do with their setup which in itself may signal something about what impact he is likely to have for us. A defensive setup a usually protects a keeper and a more attack minded team exposes a keeper, so statistically he is more likely to be beaten.
3) It still doesn't mean that even at the perceived decline he isn't better than our current no1,
4) or that he still isn't (at least on paper) amongst the top 5 keepers in the league. Degea, Courtois are better, Lloris is probably a draw, I'd take Cech over Hart and I cant remember the Southampton keeper.

The issue isn't Cech or his abilities, like I said we need more than Cech to make a difference.

his current level is unknown.

it will either turn out to be a masterstroke or we'll be no better off than we are now. every keeper is capable of a howler or having a bad game. cech had a few bad games in 2013/14. you cant evaluate him at all based on 2014/15. he might come in, rejuvenated, and be one of the best keepers in the league. or he may be done.

for £7m (£11m for him, minus the £4m we get for ospina, which sucks) its worth a shot.

Come on man, Lloris, Hart & Forster better than Cech? Hart is a bloody joke, many City fans wouldn't hesitate to get rid of him. You can't cherry pick games as proof he is past it, he played poorly away against PSG in 2014 but was one of their best players in the home game. Remember him making a match winning save in the last few minutes of that game.

As for Szczesny, that guy has backwards in the last 18 months so I'm not sure what another 18 months will do for him. If anything training under Cech might instil some discipline into him, a change of GK coach won't harm him either. Wenger is fiercely loyal to his players, the fact that he's had enough should speak volumes.

I know you love talking about mentality but that is one area where Cech will excel compared to many of our players. Guy is a winner and he isn't joining us just for his kids. He knows this club can win trophies and wants to help. The fact your man Mourinho is desperate for him not to join us should speak volumes as well.

Cech alone isn't going to elevate us to title winners but he will improve us. There isn't one player available who will win us the title so we have to look at the team as a whole and improve where we can.
