Wenger ever so often reels out his 'it is the clubs who make the players' and that they have an obligation to honor their contracts. Wenger also is fond of reiterating to the press that WE have the power to dictate whether any player will leave when they are under contract. We also absolutely and categorically told Barcelona that there was no chance in hell we were selling Cesc the summer when they first came calling.

Rodgers is not just asked questions, he's constructing a narrative. When any other manager is asked about ongoing negotiations they answer short and simple. They don't start banging their chest and sing praises about how their club is the greatest one in the world and everyone should be proud to play for them. That's done to rile up the fans and put pressure on a player who's starting to become too good for them.

On that note, I have no doubts whatsoever that Wenger told RVP that we were keeping him his last year. Say what you want about Persie, but he is a savvy guy. Something made him issue that statement to force the club's hand.

Didn't David Ornstein wrote a lengthy article about the RVP saga? He claimed that RVP apparently told Wenger if he forced him to stay, he will leave on a bosman to which Wenger says he will sell him then, to abroad. But he forced Wenger's hand by saying he will only move to Manure.

Back to Sterling, this is how he compares to other u21 players in europe. (Had to google Benjamin Mendy, interesting stats there)

Ability to play in so many roles is impressive too.

Liverpool will definitely miss him if he leaves. Would be interesting to see how they cope with having key players leave every season like us in the past.

Walcott shouldn't have issued that Twatter statement, and Sterling shouldn't have given that interview. This is about players wanting to maintain a certain image in the public eye, when their managers are just admitting, when asked, that there are difficulties in extending their contracts.

Rex i agree with you Sterling. Think Pool are right in their position.

However you need to give Wenger credit a lot more credit. Irrerespective of what he has won or lost he simply one of the FINEST 'people managers' in the game. He could literally run a 'poker school in govan'. Forget what he says, so much of it is what he does not say. Rodgers is not even a patch on him.

Does anyone else think that our growing base of Brits in the squad is a factor that's attractive to the likes of Sterling? These are mates that are all on the England team together after all.

rogers swings for the fences in these situations, and plays to the fans alot. it usually backfires and makes him look silly, but i find it amusing that he airs out and publicly shames these footballers who try to tap dance their way out the door

IF he is interested in us it is simply down to our better prospects for the next three years. He's looking at our team and thinking "I can make a great front 5 with Ramsey, Ozil, Sanchez and Giroud. Much better than what Liverpool will be able to conjure up". That's what it comes down to. Same reason RvP was tempted by United. We should be actively preying on Liverpool, Southampton, etc., for players. Just as City have done to us in the past.

The attraction with us to him is definitely because we have a track record of playing in the champs league and we are London based

Love to get Sterling and pack up Walcott and send him on his way. Only question is where does that leave Ozil because then we will have Alexis, Sterling, Chamberlain and Ozil competing for two spots - that's depth we haven't had in a long long time and smells like fantasy football a little bit. Also, I fear that getting Sterling will distract Wenger from the real work - 2 CMs and a CB.

Nope. Ozil is our number 10. Sanchez, Chamberlain, Sterling would compete for the wide places.

He's not worth any where near 35m, particularly with a year to go on his contract. That would make him one of the top 10 most expensive transfers of all time.

Top 10 in England maybe. The top 10 global transfers are all over 50m pounds. With the massive increase in both Premier League and Champions League money next season, 35m pounds will be considered reasonable

I check, it'll be in the top 15/16 transfers of all time. It's still astonishingly high for a 20 year who's extremely talented but has done very little so far in his career to justify that compared to the players who've moved previously for that price.*

*Andy fucking Carroll excluded.
