We've lucked out with our fees for Alexis and Özil in a way. They were both well below market value. It's why I think our best bet to get hold of top attacking talent is to sign guys like Götze or Draxler or Cavani, whose stock have fallen a little bit recently.

That's why I'm all for Draxler - take a world class player or world class talent wherever and whenever you can get them. They are extremely hard to come by and worth paying big money for, especially if you're getting them below their peak value.

Think Di Maria was being sold for 50m euros to PSG and when they couldn't meet FPP Madrid realised United were desperate.

Yeah, but those are the clubs who dictate the market for top transfers. Reus doesn't get a price tag based on what Sunderland think he's worth.

If those clubs want to sell the player they usually go for around 30 to 40m. Fabregas, Sanchez, Ozil. It's only when clubs outside the CL or growing like PSG/Utd/Monaco etc make desperate bids does the price go into 50 to 60m. Barca and Real have too much money but apart from those two, not many pay over 40m for players.

There's so much more money in football than there was 5 years ago. The market is reflecting two things - 1) the larger pots of cash available, and 2) the increasing importance of a superstar as means to winning both on the field and commercially. So while the price of Bale now might be 70m pounds versus 40m pounds for the same quality three or four years ago, a Fabregas will not have appreciated significantly in the same time.

Agree. I think at our current level now financially and status wise, we would be better off snapping up talents that is firstly not at a big club and secondly won't cost more than 40-50m dollar. That would allow us to build our squad in every area with great talents (maybe not the top top tier like with Barca/Madrid, but one level below players). We can't afford to spunk 80-100m on superstars yet.

There's always been crazy money mega deals. Remember Real Betis signing Denilson after the 98 World Cup for a world record fee? In Italy the likes of Vieri, Crespo and Veron would move on virtually every summer for a ridiculous fee. The Galacticos etc.

I think the market is the same as ever, you have huge money outliers but then you can get plenty of real value too.

The difference is that the transfer record wasn't nearly as high back in -98, even when you account for inflation. 21 of the 30 most expensive players of all time have been signed within the last 5 years. It's not just the fees that have increased tenfold - the rate at which these transfers happens has increased too. Denilson is #77 on the list nowadays.

Agüero cost Manchester City £38 million back in 2011. Does anyone think he'd have moved for less than £60 million today under the same circumstances?

Diego Costa moved from the same club only last summer at a lower fee than what City paid for Agüero.

Because Costa had previously signed a new deal with Atletico, with the provision that it contained a buyout clause fixed at £32 million.

Every player has the opportunity to get whatever clauses they want into their contracts or not signing.

That's not what we were arguing about, though. I asked if anyone thought Agüero would have moved for that fee again today under the same circumstances, and you answered by naming a player who moved under completely different circumstances (i.e. by Chelsea activating a release clause that was set lower than market value because it was a condition for him extending his contract in 2013).
