Personally, I agree with Wenger. Having it count after extra time makes much more sense. In that way, for e.g. Monaco would be forced to come out to play before extra time.

The away goal is stupid because it takes away the importance of keeping a clean sheet away from home. Is 2-0 away really easier than 3-1?

Think the away goal rules should be scrapped completely, it serves no purpose and if anything does more to kill games off as a spectacle as games like the one against Monaco go out of reach.

But Wenger's suggestion, as currently enforced in the League Cup, is completely unfair. It gives the team playing in the second leg an extra half an hour to score an extra away goal.

True, didn't thought of that.

How about the away goals only coming into play with both ties ended up in draws?

The away goal rule is actually pretty good in some ways.

It makes it much less likely for the teams to draw over the two legs, and makes it likely for a contender to go from losing to winning with one goal in the second leg.

I love the combination of fear, tension and hope that the away goal rule brings to a tie.
Even though we've fallen foul of it so often I'd hate to see it abolished.

i love it.

wenger fails at setting his teams up to deal and wants it abolished.

Would prefer to go out on away goals than by losing a penalty shoot-out, personally.

Not sure Wenger would be bringing this up had we gone through on away goals this year, or against Munich 2 seasons ago, etc.

I like the rule. Teams are conservative enough in CL games now but it was worse before the away goal rule and managers like Mourinho, Rafa, etc would absolutely destroy ties with negative football if the away goal rule didn't exist.

I think it should be scrapped simply because I don't see how winning 3-2 away and losing 0-1 at home makes you better than the opposition. When two teams have scored as many goals, why does it matter that one of them scored more away goals than the other? The other team scored more home goals.

BTW complaining about this from Wenger is a lot more embarrassing than the hand shake bullshit.

It's pretty simple Quince.

The problem with knockout ties in Europe is that home advantage is significant, so they invented two-legged ties.

The problem with two-legged ties is that if they end in a draw, you can't comfortably replay the whole tie.

And some other ways to split the teams are clearly unfair (extra time favours the home team at the second ground) or crappy and devalue the efforts made in normal time, like penalty shootouts.

Interestingly, it is a myth that there's an advantage to playing the second leg of a two-legged tie at home. Statistically there's no advantage.

Except it didn't kill off the games as a spectacle and it was Wengers stupid naive tactics that put the second game out of reach.

You're contradicting yourself there, you can't have it both ways.

Exactly. People have to realise that it was put into place for a reason. It encourages teams to come out and play. The only thing that isn't fair about it in its current state is that away goals still count in extra time. This means that whoever is playing away in the second game has half an hour extra advantage if it comes down to it.

How did it encourage Monaco to come out and play?

They scored three goals away from home...
