It has been one of my criticisms of Wenger, he needlessly switched to a more demanding/difficult style at a time when we were broke and were competing against far richer clubs.
High possession football gets you into trouble whenever you play a team with more talent than you, but it's also kept us very consistent against the small teams in the league, even in the years when we were losing all our players. Yes it's sickening to be beaten by bad teams so frequently, but the experience of Dortmund this season suggests that more reactive teams, even if they play a more forgiving style and are better set up for big games, can really struggle to break opponents down consistently in the league. Wengerball creates chances to win games, especially when our best players are fit.
I think there's a need for us to get away from that template now given our new financial situation, and it doesn't seem like Wenger's the one for the job. But we don't get CL football all those years without mastering the same free-flowing possession style that got us killed in big games. IMO.
