we need more players of ozil's level. what i mean is, players that make the right decision 95% of the time. we have a handful of goofy players in our team that make the wrong move at crucial times, something ozil very rarely does. yes significant parts of the team need re-tooling, but we need to cling on to players like ozil for dear life, because if the structure of the team is settled, he has the x factor that separates you from the competition.

When we're clicking (dominating possession) he generally ends the game with at least an assist, and a few chances created.

When we're up against the walls he is one of the few players (alongside Giroud) that can actually help us break a proper press.

With that said, it still feels like he's not played to his full potential here and why is up to your own analysis / desires. Either because he's been poor (off form) or because we don't have good enough players alongside him. There are issues with each argument, and those reasons certainly polarize fans.

Ozil has never had a spell in an Arsenal shirt as good as Alexis in the fall, and Alexis has never had a spell as poor as Ozil was in the fall, so until that changes Sanchez is the superior player for me

I love watching Özil on a football pitch, so I am probably a bit biased here, but I think we are a far better team when he is on the pitch. That goes for his apparently 'piss poor' spell last season as well. We are more fluid, we retain possession better, we create more chances, and Özil is, for me, at the heart of all that.

He has sublime technique, everything looks so effortless, and he just glides across the pitch, always on the move. Özil creates space where there is none, and he has that very, very rare ability of looking like he always has time on the ball even in a league as fast paced as the PL.

I have always preferred thinking players like Özil over action players. That's why, for me, Ronaldo isn't even in the same stratosphere as Messi as a footballer, and that is why I much prefer watching Özil over Alexis. That last part drives my 14 year old nuts; he just can't comprehend how anyone can prefer watching Özil over Alexis, and I can't properly explain or show him with game sequences (God knows I have tried).

It's the Bergkamp vs Henry argument all over again. Even though it was clear as day Titi was better, you had half the fanbase claim Bergy was the superior player at Arsenal.

I suppose it boils down to taste then like Rex pointed out.

Henry had wider recognition in the world awards to though Bergkamp once came third.

With Ozil and Sanchez it's the other way though. Ozil has been on the 30 man Ballon Do'r list 4 times from 2010 to 2013.

Ozil came 13th in 2010, 11th in 2011, 14th in 2012 and 16th in 2013.

Sanchez has never been on these lists.

So you really can't use that argument.

Currently there is only one of those players among the top 2-3 at what he does and it's not Sanchez.

They are the exact opposites.

Alexis demands the ball in every situation possible, seems to try hard to make something of it, makes wrong decisions over and over again, fails, people moan, pulls it off once, people cheer and say that he always kept trying and that he is a superb player.

Özil on the other hand tries to get himself in the correct position before asking/wanting the ball so the risk of failing is minimized, once he has it, he makes the correct decision most of the times, if he sometimes happens to fail, people bitch and moan like crazy about it and whatever he has pulled off successfully during the game (quite a lot usually) is overshadowed by those few unsuccessful attempts. People then proceed to say he is a bad player, who somehow managed to put another 2 assists on the table despite being crap.

Every game.

The bit about Ozil is nonsense, if anything people go crazy whenever anyone mentions he's had a poor game and point to his assists or his 'chances created' as evidence that any criticism is invalid. A simple poor pass is micro analysed to show it in a light to suggest that it was, in fact, a stroke of genius. On the other hand, he had no assists and no goals against QPR and yet everyone thought he was terrific.

He does get a rough ride at times from the odd poster and particularly from idiots in the media, but what the February player of the month poll and threads like this show is that Arsenal fans can't wait to get on board when he consistently puts in performances worthy of the player we all know him to be.

Oh come on, he is clearly a brilliant player when he's on form but from December until he got injured last season he was absolutely useless. Which isn't a massive crime either, he'd been good before that and a Premiership winter is a tough thing for a new player to get used to.

Ozil is an extremely difficult player to discuss on here because on one hand we have people like yourself who think everything he does and every game he has is great. We have people going as far as to claim he has magical abilities that only a very select few geniuses can see. Then on the other hand we have the Daily Mail crowd who claim he doesn't even try, that he contributes so little to team that he is basically a midfield Berbatov.

The truth of course is between these two things. He's a world class player who has had poor spells, has strengths and weakness and who isn't always helped by his manager. Quite clearly though he is one of our best players and a hugely important part of any future success we might achieve in the next couple of years.

No, not at all. Just my opinion is all.

Qs, I am well aware that Özil was in a slump then, but I disagree that he was ever as bad as he was made out to be.

People say I see things in black and white but thats just because as an ex-keeper you have to be decisive one way or the other and quickly too, but with Ozil I still have to make up my mind.
He's clearly a very talented player but its also clear that Wenger doesn't know how to use him properly like so many others, so we haven't seen the best of him yet.

There's another standard when it comes to Ozil. It's normally pretty easy to see who has had a bad or good games, but for Ozil there's always other factors that needs to be considered.

-There are no runners in the team
-He covered a lot of distance
-People can't see the things he do well outside of play
-People don't understand his game
-There players around is making him look bad
-He is played out of position

Basically, he's has been in good form since he's back from injuries, but when he has bad games it tends to get spin off. Honestly, I still expect a lot more from him. He is much better than this. Maybe there are still people trying to justify his extravagant fee.
