I think he's playing well at the moment, but he's also mainly multiplying the good or improved form of the players around him.

He's been looking a lot better since Coquelin came on, Cazorla lifted, Giroud's hot(ish) streak, etc.

He's a great asset, and works quite tirelessly—you should pay your respects to him for that at least Biggus. Compared to United we're packed with ideas.

I disagree. When he's at his best, anyone and everyone can appreciate his contribution. He's upped his game and as a result he's been getting a lot of credit recently. Didn't get any assists or goals against QPR but got rave reviews. The "hipster" stuff that's harder to spot is just an aspect of his game, the rest, such as his touch, decision making, vision, passing etc are all very visible and when he's on it like he has been recently almost everyone will agree he's playing well.

I only watched the game on the BBC so missed a lot of the "hipster" stuff that's why my first comment was to express overall disappointment in his performance as i noticed "less than perfect" ball control on 2 or 3 occasions. I wouldn't have said anything if it was any other player.

The first goal is all down to Chamberlain but Ozil moves brilliantly in that move. First to receive the ball on the left in space and then through the center to occupy defenders and give Monreal room. None of this is 'hipster' stuff, whatever that means.

I appreciate what he does - his off the ball movement and decision making is incredibly good, and I love watching silky players like him on the ball. But, IMO, when all is said and done, his reputation as one of the best players in the world has taken a justified hit. He's up there as the most talented player in the world. We need more, and it needs to be obvious even for us idiots - just like it was for Bergkamp.

Ozil is still absolutely infuriating at times, I don't see how anyone can honestly say otherwise. He was stronger in the challenge on Monday; which was refreshing, but his touch and passing at the start of the game was annoying and he completely messed up the great position he found himself in for our first goal. Chamberlain's brilliance saved the situation.

He got much better as the game wore on, much better, but it seems to me he often starts to play better when the game becomes more stretched and his movement really comes into play. I think he struggles with it being tight and compact because he has poor resistance to any physical pressure and his touch and balance isn't good enough to compensate for it. I know that's the supposed to be his stock and trade but I don't see that.

Hmmm. I tend to find myself thinking on similar lines to Patters and Ricky when it comes to Özil.
I think that's mainly because when he does fluff a pass, or leave the ball behind as he runs forward (as he did versus United - though he did retrieve it ) it jars, it's almost a shock and that leaves a bigger impression than the moving, positioning that often happens off camera.

I think you have to accept that he's no Pires/Fabregas/Bergkamp. I'm not going to lie, he frustrates me to no end, as well.

What should have he done in that position? Blasted it in from 30 yards out, Steven Gerrard style? Chamberlain was his only option. Mesut crucially kept the move going and gave our other attacking players a chance to succeed.

Agree with this. Clearly talented, but I'd be surprised if he broke into the HOF.

I think people warm to him more now, because we've lacked serious quality for a long while. However, had Ozil been around in 2008, he'd have faced the same shit as guys like Hleb and Rosicky.

That pass to Chambo was pretty bad though. It was behind him, causing him to take a step back. It was all down to Ox's brilliance. There was so much space in between the 2 CBs of United that the logical way was to actually run through them.

He did well initially but in the end he passed it to someone in a less advantageous position and the pass wasn't great either, not really sure how anyone can argue otherwise. It's not the crime of the century but no point dressing it up as anything other than what it was.

It wasn't the best pass, but I think he kept the move going. He's not going to take a guy on, burst past him, and hammer it at goal from 18 yards. Welbeck, Alexis, and Monreal weren't really open. I think he made the best decision available to him. When you keep possession in the final third, good things happen.

It's the type of pass I'd expect Giroud to make. People under rate his pace and dribbling ability, if he wanted to he could have run directly at that defence.

It's not true anyway. We're talking about a player who, statistically, has been the best in the world for over half a decade in terms of creating chances and racking up assists. That he's great without the ball too is a separate point and shouldn't have to be illustrated through a false dichotomy. It's obvious as a day what he brings to a team in terms of creativity and sheer end product.

I agree with the notion that he's frustrating. For 42m I really do expect more of an influence across the full 90.

There is nothing invisible about what Ozil does, and just about the entire last page of this thread talking about how he "frustrates" people is just a load of subjective bollocks.

He works hard, scores goals, and provides assists. He's also entertaining and has outrageous ability on the ball. Whatever else people "read" into his "character" or what-have-you is just as idiotic as the people (like me) who don't like Ramsey whatever he does or doesn't do. It's preconceptions and bias, not objective realism.
