Mesut coming out of his shell?

He created 6 chances and got one assist today for the record. The league average for attacking mids is 1.5 chances per game. No player has created more than 10 chances in a single game this season. (It was Özil that time around too, against Southampton the other week; smashing the previous league record which was the 9 chances he created against Bournemouth just before the turn of the year.)

Maybe he didn't have a lot of space to play in due to Leicester's compact nature, but you'd have to be pretty picky to have any issues with him today.

I'd like to think he playing very hard. His 'languid style' notwithstanding he definitely seems to be giving his best on the pitch

I can pardon his "poor" games for that reason now. In the past he just didn't seem to be putting as much effort in.

I think Ozil's being let down by his teammates again - he could have had another 4-5 assists since the turn of the year but some of our finishing this side of Christmas has been embarrassing.

And, while agree Ozil's form isn't what it was between October and November, he's still been sublime. To me it resembles how he was this time last year where he was instrumental to everything good we did but, because we weren't winning, people were quick to be critical. Aside from the Liverpool and Southampton games, he's still been fantastic and Henry's assist record would have long since been beaten if we took more of our chances

Yeah, its an embarrassment actually that it isnt broken already. Hopefully others are finding some better form in the coming weeks and finish Henrys record once and for all.

He was absolutely fantastic vs Southampton and by miles the best player on the pitch.

Yesterday he was average, but won it in the end with a glorious delivery. Can't remember the last we've won in the league without him contributing.

Just looked it up - the only two wins without him contributing directly with a goal/assist are both games vs Newcastle, one which he didn't play. We've 15 wins btw.

He has been nothing short of sensational.

By the standards he has set, i thought his performance was poor.
As Flobs said, it wasn't a lack of effort but just one of those days when nothing came off.

Apparently Özil has created 105 chances this season with 12 games still to go.

To put that in context, Hazard who was the league's most creative player last year created 99 chances throughout the entire season. Fabregas created 91.

I think his form has fallen a little due to him working less. At the start of the season when he was dominating constantly he was also fighting hard etc, etc Now he's still doing well, creating chances, etc but there is a drop, albeit a slight drop from extreme heights so he remains one of the best players in the league and vitally important. I also reckon the drop is inevitable when he's carried us this far. Time for the others to do a bit of the work and just let Ozil worry about creating.

His form earlier in the season wasn't really sustainable anyway, it was bound to come down a notch. The FA Cup games and the little injury have probably helped kill some of the momentum, on the other hand it will probably help keep him at a relatively high level for the rest of the season.

Not many cherries to pick from our team performance against United, but I thought it should be mentioned all the same: Özil was really good today. One goal, one assist and half a dozen chances created. One or two of them would definitely have resulted in goals with better forwards up front. And he erased Busquets from the game mid-week too. I think it's encouraging that he keeps playing at a high level even when our general performances take a dip. It means that there's something to build on for us.

His pass to Monreal should have resulted in a goal. The vision and execution deserved it. Such a shame his excellent season would be a waste.

He was our only player who didn't stink it up though. Its sad no one else in teh team is performing even close to his level.

I wasn't keeping count of them but it seems about right. There was Monreal's miss in the beginning, one or two chances that Welbeck fluffed, a corner where Rashford saved with his hand, etc. It's not like we lacked opportunities to kill this game.

We need to start taking that first clear cut chance we get. Result on Tuesday against Barca and today would be different if we just convert the first one on one chance with the goalkeeper.
