Americans have a love affair with violence as a way to solve problems, not only on an individual scale, but on a social scale (police, security, war, etc.), and it goes all the way back to the country's inception. There are literally hundreds of millions of guns in the country. And this guy was a registered gun owner and a security guard if I remember correctly, no legislation is stopping him from having a gun. It's a very difficult thing to stop. While I support common sense prevention measures, I think political attention should be focused on creating a social safety net and jobs programs to make life in America much less difficult and desperate than it currently is. The common thread linking all these mass shooters is a sense of desperation, alienation, and hopelessness that gets channeled into extreme ideology and an American penchant for gun violence.
