Yes, we should also blame the Internet, mass media, the advancement of technology, being able to travel the world without many restrictions, emigration etc. that weren't there in times gone by.

I'd rather lose religion than anything from that list though.

Again I agree that it's somewhat of a cheap shot in the face of people dying. At the same time whenever something like this happens it's a sad reminder that if something were to happen to some of "our" (that is the non-European part of this board) neighbours or families we wouldn't get a Facebook plugin but people like Irish posting funny 4chan memes.

I wouldn't blame anything (bar mass media to an extent) for these tragedies happening more often any more than I would religion per se.

That aside how would you go about "losing" religion?

I can't think of a humane way to achieve that, Jones.

Unfortunately it probably has to get increasingly worse until something very radical happens.

It's obvious some members here take a straightforward European view of violence committed in Europe against Europeans. The answer's not to negate those reactions it's to try to put them in context.

The argument on the causes of this kind of violence is still to be won when people are happy to say "Islam" causes it … I'll probably cop flak just for saying that.

But I don't think there's anyone on here that holds life cheap. Unfair shot on Irish as well.

It was argued that people are radicalised into extremist atheism.

It is of course off topic but that is the point for religious apologists at times like this.

Promote Education, Skepticism, Freedom, Empathy, Fairness, and Cooperation.

Countries in the middle east lack these somewhat. They have a different view on how things should be. Not all, but some countries.

It's just semantics though. Atheism when used in that context is just a generalisation for a range of ideologies the centre around the rejection of god/religion.
