Biggus hasn't lived here in years though, it's not actually the case anymore that there are massively different accents every 30km.
There are specific strong accents in particular urban and rural areas but there are much softer generic accents that span the whole country, particularly amongst the under 40 age group.
I find it difficult these days to figure out where people are from based on their accents.

I don't agree with that at all. I could go 30km north and I'd be in South Dublin where the accents are very different to a Wicklow Town accent. If I go 30km west I get close to Carlow which is hugely different and then south you have the Wexford accent which is more similar than the other 2 but still quite different, one of my best mates is from Wexford and he sounds completely different to the rest of us.

Maybe so, I don't know anyone from Wicklow or Carlow so I can't say.
I do work with a load of under 35s from Tipp, Waterford, Kerry, Cork and Limerick and there's no major difference in the accents.
I guarantee you'd be hard pressed to figure out where they are from.
There's one from Wexford and to me it sounds as if her accents very D4.

It’s a little depressing alright. The press are talking about an ‘electoral earthquake’ again but all I really see is a continuation of what has gone before. FG/FF have been gradually bleeding votes to the left for years as their die-hards die out but it’s a slow process, and in the meantime all that happens is the pendulum of power continues to swing between the two parties.

It’ll be an earthquake when we get a government lead by a party other than FG or FF, and that still looks a long way off. We could have had it now if Labour had stayed out of government in 2011, but they (in my view) sacrificed themselves for the country.

So the death of people voting on traditional/emotional lines has been much exaggerated even in politically sophisticated Ireland.

Sort of. Thebdifference between young and old voters is bigger than its ever been. Seems the days of voting for whoever the family votes for is over. FF and FG are still for the over 40s but below that it was largely SF and R2C. Almost everyone I talked to voted for the Social Democrats.

We have still seen an unprecedented number of votes for independent candidates and candidates disposed to left wing policies.
An indication that a significant percentage of voters wanted fundamental changes made.

FF may have gained some ground, but with a seats total in the mid 40s they are still miles away from their heady days of 70 plus seats.
Now that they are no longer perceived as the anti FF saviours FG have just reverted back to where they were before 2011 and poor Labour have been wiped out.
Seems that Sinn Fein have hoovered up the 20ish pre 2011 seats that used to be Labour's which to me is a great shame.
I'm glad the Shinners didn't do as well as they were expecting.

Well that'd be the second thing that's wrong with them, the first being they are led by Gerry Adams who has covered up for his paedophile brother, along with moving known rapists around in order to avoid them appearing before the courts.

What's wrong with a united Ireland? Geographically it makes sense. But of course respect the people's wishes first.

If anyone is still following the refugee situation in Europe - the German government has passed a bill a couple of days ago to "accelerate" the handling of asylum requests; measures taken include the handling in newly created reception centres in newly declared "safe" countries of origin such as Morocco or Algeria, the omission of PTSDs and any other not immediately life threatening illnesses as legal obstacles for deportation and a large number of other exacerbations for the living conditions of refugees. Another central point is that anyone who safely got here isn't allowed to bring the rest of their family for at least two years; a blatant erosion of asylum law which has been extremely hollowed out in the early 90s already.

Can't recall who it was here that claimed last summer Merkel was showing the old suits in the rest of Europe what humane politics look like but evidently I wasn't just being cynical or bitter for no reason back then when I expected the worst.

It's not about geography or making a neat one nation island.
There are still deep cultural divisions within the Northern Irish community - lumping these communities into the Republic would be like throwing petrol on a smouldering fire.

Just to give you an inkling of the kind of problems that would arise:

In December 2012, a decision by Belfast City Council to limit the flying of the Union Flag over City Hall triggered months of loyalist protests, some of which descended into violence*.

Like the policy adopted at City Hall, the Union flag is only flown on Parliament Buildings on a number of designated days each year.

But politicians have to date failed to agree a comprehensive framework for managing the flying of flags on public buildings and on lamp posts in republican and loyalist communities across Northern Ireland.

*The cost of policing the flag protests ran up to £20 million.

Nah its too small to be economically viable, the only solution is what France did with the Pieds noirs (French settlers in Algeria), they must be paid compensation to leave.

I spent most of last year predicting EU-funded immigration internment camps in North Africa so I guess I won that bet.

Nth Ireland is not Luxembourg, too much water and blood has flowed under the bridge, Britain must bite the bullet and bring home Cromwells settlers.
If the package was generous enough most would accept, for the hard core that remained their situation would become increasingly untenable, rip the band aid off quickly its the only way.....
