but you aren't even american, what you consider a good president won't necessarily be the same for me as a socially liberal, slight fiscal conservative american. obama for one was a brilliant candidate, turned out to be a pretty damn good president too. i'd vote for him again in a heartbeat over anyone that's running right now.

Foreign policy disappointments aside, Obama has indeed been a decent Prez.

That Trump nomination has been blown way out of proportions. Any random sod with the credentials can nominate someone, doesn't mean they'd be shortlisted.

and even "foreign policy disappointments" is subjective based on where you're coming from. to conservative americans he's a foreign policy failure because he isn't sufficiently tough enough on the middle east: actually following through with the SOFA and withdrawing troops from iraq, not redeploying tens of thousands of troops to fight ISIS, making a nuclear deal with iran, not being unflinching BFFs with israel. also should have started a proxy war after russia took crimea because sanctions are for pussies, etc. shit they are apoplectic right now because yesterday he went to a mosque in baltimore and thanked muslim americans for their contribution to our country. to the peace crowd any action that results in death is a foreign policy failure. that's the environment he governs in.

anyway, my financial state is always my top priority and my stock portfolio has done EXTREMELY well these past 7 years.

Obama will probably be better than his successor on foreign policy, sadly that's more of a scathing indictment of your country than any reason to praise him.

Hilarious that moments after the nuclear deal with Iran was confirmed and sanctions lifted, Clinton was calling for them to be reinstated.

It's not about what's good for America vs the rest of the world though, it's about what's good for certain interests which act global and are not limited to national boundaries.

Since you mentioned your stock portfolio (although I struggle to see what Obama has to do with that): what Bush Jr did was also good and highly profitable for a very select group of Americans. They follow this exact reasoning of only looking out for yourself at the expense of others instead of voting for what would be best for the broad populace.

I'd even argue that voting for Hillary would be against your own interest in this case as you'd be literally voting Wall Street into the US Treasury and Lord knows they've shown in the past they can't be trusted to govern themselves. Unless you're an institutional level of investor you probably won't have an interest in bullish markets for a year or two followed by what will most likely be an even bigger crash than the last one.

These dubious treaties represent a smash and grab on behalf of, and to protect the profits of, transnational vested interests (large corporations esp. intellectual property rights holders), enforced in part by the contingency of US military and political alliance, and interpreted on behalf of the citizens of different countries globally through a false lens of "national interest".

They include surprising, secretly drafted concessions of sovereignty that should be inalienable from the people of individual democracies.

A typical citizen's interests are not in a clear sense the "national interest". The "national interest" usually means the interests of the legislative enclosure's strongest capital alliance against other, similar alliances globally.

you struggle to see what obama has to do with economic performance (and the stock market is a part of that) and then you're saying it's against my interest to vote for hillary. she won't have anything to do with it either then. basically according to you it doesn't matter who is president the market will perform the same anyway. i don't get the dubya-obama market comparisons. in feb 2000 the dow was around 14k, when he was left it was down to 8k. so obama got it at 8k and it's now at 16.3k. so yeah there may have been a select few who profited from the dow being cut in half during the bush years, but a broader section (and a large % of americans have money tied up in the market) benefited from it doubling.

i know one thing, my porffolio wouldn't look like this if obama was for austerity in 2009 like the republicans were.

and right now my interests are in certain stocks going down, i'll leave it at that.

I was really surprised to see the total lack of interest in or even awareness of TTIP, TPP and CETA in both Canada and the US during my stay there.

The German population isn't exactly politically educated or interested yet even here we had marches with 250,000 people against the treaties couple of months back. Naturally so you'd think given the level of confidentiality of the legal texts, not even the parliament is allowed to see the contents.

As you say the lines of "citizen interests" don't run vertically between nations but horizontally across the literal border. Rich fucks in different countries are infinitely more likely to group their interests together than a poor and a well off man who have the same passports. It's only the lower class who still thinks nationalism or patriotism is a factor when it comes to economic issues and it's also what leads to their own downfall time and time again.

It was a genuine question when I wondered about the relation of your portfolio and Obama's policies. He did well when he didn't cave in to the Republicans' demands for austerity, you only need to look at Europe to see what would've been the consequences.

Business cycles take a bit longer than the time frame you've mentioned though. The Dow Jones took a nosedive in the early 2000s because of the Dotcom bubble which was caused by Clinton's policies of deregulation, not Bush (although he certainly didn't help). I'll give Obama that he's not a radical market liberator by design but many decisions he's made show that he didn't really try to make the changes he might have initiated, sometimes he just made it blatantly worse e.g. by appointing people like Eric Holder as AG.

Regardless, I wasn't talking about index performance but overall macroeconomic decisions during their tenures. Sanders is the first candidate to candidly name several deeprooted issues that America's economy has, that's why I called him the best candidate in years. He might end up like Obama having to compromise many of his positions to push through a number of acts he prioritised but him directly and concisely attacking Wall Street is already something that no one else has done that I can think of.
