Liverpool have spent a lot of money for a number of years and they haven't spent it well. Even in windows when they didn't make a lot from sales they did spend money on average players.
I remember, going back to Benitez’s time, he had a moan about how much we could spend on youth players compared to them. Claimed it wasn’t comparable as we could afford to pay for quality young players and they couldn’t. Now, setting aside opinions of the likes of Hoyte, a young Ramsey, Denilson. Song who were in the team at the time, I remember thinking his point was ridiculous for two reasons. Firstly because we (and it’s been debated to death - for better or worse) pursued that policy of bringing through those young players as first team members whereas he frittered £6-7 million on the likes of Craig Bellamy and Peter Crouch, and over £10m on Ryan Babel for example. And secondly, we still never spent large amounts on them. He had a high turnover of dross that they’ve paid handsomely for in his squads over the years, as they have without Benitez too.
I think there is a general inferiority complex about how big they are and they are under pressure to feel as if they belong at the top table. It’s interesting to hear Carragher’s recent comments about them being like Spurs, a club the top teams don’t really fear. They’ve had their moments in recent history but it’s fallen short of being able to convince anyone they’re a massive club. I think the worry for them bringing in Klopp should be that it would feed that delusion further, whilst their transfer committee continues to underachieve and waste money on players who aren’t raising their level.
