Remember Tactics made a good post recently in the Ozil thread saying it was less about playing Ozil left or central (or right...as usual the front line were shifting positions quite a lot), but more about whether you want him in and around goal or driving forward from just past the halfway line. A few more goals would be the quickest way to convince everyone that's a good position for him, but even without, a top first touch and right decisions would see us score a lot more.

He was closer to the goal through the middle though. Last season his heat maps usually showed that he played further forward than Giroud over the course of a game.

Yeah, I think the remarkable thing about the goal Özil scored today was that he ran 63 meters in order to do it. They talked a bit about this after the game in the studio. That's just the reality of being a wide player, and definitely not something you see him do regularly. If you want him closer to goal I'm not sure the left wing is the greatest place. Aston Villa were absolutely dirt poor too. The last time we had this much space in a game was against Fenerbahce.

Fair points about Ozil's position from last year - but that position doesn't exist in this current system. None of the 3 in the centre of midfield (Ramsey, Cazorla, Coquelin) are playing Ozil's role from last year (in a no.10 position or style). If we want him near goal now without messing up a midfield that seems to be working, there's wide left, CF or wide right. But it's not as restrictive as it sounds because our wingers often swap sides - Theo and Ozil did that in both halves. The only trade offs there IMO are that he will probably be on the ball less. The benefits are that his own off the the ball running should present him with a lot of goalscoring chances.

It is true that Villa were atrocious but unlike early on in the season we are now creating high percentage chances. Our technical level has improved tremendously and we are moving the ball much faster. The movement is also better. Ozil's goal right from the moment Walcott picks up the ball is top quality technically. Actually so is the third goal. Our short passing early on in the season just didn't have such precision.

There will definitely be bigger tests but as long as we show the work rate we have done recently and keep this technical level we will beat absolutely anyone.

I think today on the wings, Ozil has played the best I have seen him play there. His combination play with Santi was pretty fantastic, especially for the goal that was wrongly chalked off. I am a bit more optimistic about him playing there seeing some positives that he can do on the wings

I'd give Wenger this season to prove that he can get as much out of Özil on the flank, but I still don't see it happening in the long term. It looked like Özil was playing in a 30 yard space by himself today. I have no idea what the hell Lambert was thinking with that high line, but it was the most hilarous tactical mistake anyone's made all season against us. They took one of their central mids and both of their fullbacks out of the equation before the game had even started. Who else but a complete fuckup of a manager would play that way against us? I think Özil is going to be pinned to the flank when we face better opposition, and I think it's seriously going to limit his passing options as well as his movement.

Great game really enjoyable, good variety of goals from everyone but it really was the Santi Carzola show, he pulled the strings on everything.
Incidentally how fat has Agbonlahor gotten? 😆

Indeed, and along with the return of Theo even the most fervent manc lovers must now see that the signing of Welbeck was pointless.

The lack of quality English strikers is none of our concern, thanks to our financial wizard we're left with a 16M lemon parked in our stands.
Hopefully someone will take him off our hands but more likely he'll run his contract down and crawl back to whatever northern swamp he slithered out of.

I agree with Y va. It's not just Welbeck, it was said about Debuchy as well.

I'd agree (perhaps) looking at things now, we might have been tempted with skipping both signings (personally I still think it would have been rash, but I wouldn't bother arguing about it).

But when we signed them we really had to sign them - Debuchy was a good signing (I still think he is, though been extremely unlucky with injuries), and Welbeck was a gamble, but not a bad one in my book.

Having said all the above - F me, how exciting is Bellerin, and to me the big news of the day is actually Chuba - first time I'm convinced by him. Someone mentioned earlier his runs (or positioning?) are better than both Yaya and Welbeck - well, at least going by today they certainly are. He still looked a bit raw, and lacking confidence. But he looked a real striker - a killer in potential. Sure hope he signs.

My point Is that he's decent back-up for now.
He was bought because Giroud and Theo were out Injured

Nothing more, nothing less.
