I'm gonna have to disagree - that's completely ignoring peak-Ramsey and peak-Sanchez (amongst other factors). I agree that Ozil helped boost the team's level but not to the extent you're making out. Worth remembering we slid out of the top four in his time (but this obviously wasn't all down to him, there was a lot more to that).

There are many players where as time goes by you remember even more fondly of them. He is exactly the opposite, as time passes you realised he really was very flawed. Like what James said, Odegaaard any day of the week. And that was obvious from the very beginning.

When I look back at highlights, some of his peaks are ridiculously good but it's far and few. Very inconsistent and also flawed in front of goal. Also made me realised why Ancelotti let him go immediately

Just goes to show how powerful recency bias is. Ozil was transformational for us and look how quickly fans forget that we were on a trophyless run nearing a decade before he arrived. Almost singlehandedly took us from a team competing for fourth to one challenging for a title and winning a series of FA Cup's.

He was a unique AM in that his movement was more like a forward rather than a midfielder so he lacked many of the qualities you want in your modern AM.

daredevil personally, I'd say Alexis Sanchez had more of an impact on us as a title challenging team. Ozil, for all his qualities, seemed a little lost once Santi was unfortunately incapacitated and Alexis had fucked off to United.

That's not what I remember Özil doing singlehandedly during his Arsenal career.

Guy was good for a bit, then a wastrel after he conned us into his payday contract. And probably the most persistently publicly disrespectful player we've ever had? What a pain in the neck he was ... if you can remember him fondly I'm happy for you. I'll remember him as the little prick who beefed with every Arsenal manager since Bruce Rioch.

I felt like Arsenal started properly turning the corner the day his ties with the club were ended, and also that the curse on his later career is what you get for pitting yourself against Arsenal.

Santi and Ramsey won us the first FA cup. 2nd was a walkover. 3rd cup was more Alexis and even Welbeck, but Ozil was also very good in a combination of those 3.

I would strongly disagree with him making us title challengers. In fact he is quite flawed and one of the main reason we kept failing (lightweight in midfield, no urgency and workrate etc) which shows in big games. Of course our unbalanced team doesnt help but he is part of the reason.

Just for e.g. he had a lot of such moments in front of goal when Saka or Odegaard will shoot resulting in a higher percentage chance of goal. He always passes and the move breaks down.

On a side note, as @RocktheCasbah mentioned Alexis, I saw his name on a Saka feature today and he stats was genuinely incredible. Alexis was world class.

Özil is a cunt. Was good for 1,5 years with us and an useless pile of shit 90% of the time after that. I was so happy when we got rid of him. Hate lazy and gutless players(people) like him. Especially sickening considering how talented he was. As soon as he got his huge contract, he couldn't be bothered any more. Instead of being the savior he was supposed to be, he became an anvil chained to our feet at the time when we were fighting hard to stay afloat.

RocktheCasbah That's brilliant. Red Dwarf has always been one of my favourites and I still know most of those monologues word for word. I remember a school teacher I had many years ago used to pass off Red Dwarf quotes as his own all the time (it wasn't especially well known in NZ so I was the only one who knew them) and he used that speech as a farewell at the end of the year.

invisibleman18 for me Red Dwarf series 3-6 is absolute peak nostalgia television but also properly funny. I love that over thirty years since I first saw that episode, it's still the first thing I think of in situations like this.

lorddulaarsenal that goal against Deportivo being the highlight (if you say the hat trick goal v Chelsea, I wouldn't argue) and an absolutely incredible goal at the Lane towards the end of the 98-99 season. I really, really loved Kanu.
