Didn't he get help and recover?
I think one of the worst things about alcoholism is that you can recover or get help as many times as you want, but there's always a risk of slipping right back into it. Especially if you've not got anything to keep you sober. I'd imagine, sooner or later, people will give up on you too.
Must say though, I find it difficult to sympathise too much with anyone that walks out on their kids.
