I find it hard to feel sorry for these athletes who go from earning millions to being broke within a couple of years. The clubs should obviously advise players about how to go about with their finances, but to what extent? These are grown people. At some point you just have to take the responsibility yourself. If you're negligent enough not to care at all about your finances, then quite frankly you deserve it. Loads of people out there that are in much worse situations and by no fault of their own.

Not sure about that est. Eboue said pretty explicitly that he's uneducated (not exactly an uncommon trait for a bloke growing up in Abidjan in the 80s) and relied on his wife for that reason. It's not unheard of to have roles distributed like that in a family. There's also nothing wrong with trusting in your spouse to not fuck you over, some might even say it's a prerequisite to a healthy relationship. I disagree with blaming the victim here, his ex-wife and mother of his children seems to have known exactly what she was doing

Seems the important parts of the story are entirely missing. Doubt anyone is perfectly in the right, not sure it should be taken at face value either, especially considering the source, and transparently manipulative interview.

Yeah obviously the story is not fully told but I'm not sure why I'd doubt Eboué's account entirely. He's a professional footballer who's played at the very top level for 15 years yet he's sleeping at his friends place while his ex-wife owns the mansion and has him evicted out his second home, even taking into account the source a response like "both are at fault" seems way out of place.

I suppose he still has his health which is better than Sansom but reading The Samaritans bit at the bottom is worrying when you think of people in his situation resorting to suicide.

Seems almost unheard of though, in what circumstances would someone get 100% of the asserts? Seems beyond unreasonable that assets are divided to an extent where one party needs to camp with friends while the other can rent out a mansion.

Indeed. This is why I have my doubts, not only as to who is at fault, but what Eboue's actual situation is. Doesn't mean I categorically don't believe him, but I don't necessarily discount the idea that he might be a big 'ole liar as well.

I agree with Jones fully. Think Eboue is too uneducated to know a lot of these financial stuffs.

Could the club do something to help him out? Maybe offer him a minor role at the backend.

The man said he contemplated suicide, is homeless while his wife pocketed all of his earnings, he's barred from seeing his children and he's badly struggling to cope with the loss of both his father figure and his brother who died in an accident and your reaction is he might be lying? What's wrong with you Coombs, did you hate him that much as a player?

I don't think it's that unheard of even if it seems unusual to some. In many African communities or cultures the wife is tasked with handling the family's finances completely, Muslim countries (CIV is at least predominantly Muslim) also have this very common thing/tradition that the husband hands large parts of his wealth to his wife as some sort of guarantee in case something happened to him or in case of a divorce. Lagos (the poster) used to pontificate about this topic pretty often

So it's not like the court ordered him to give up everything, he did himself

Luckily Galatasaray has stepped in after the news broke out and offered him a youth coaching role. They will also provide accommodation and facilities for him.

20 minute long interview with Sol in that link. He's very interesting to listen to and a lot of what he said is hard to argue with, but he really does come across as quite an angry and bitter man.

Sol Campbell is probably the most underrated English defender of my lifetime. I'd give him a go as a coach no problem. I wouldn't see him going above that level because I don't think he has the temperament for it but I've no doubt he could teach the likes of Holding, Chambers, etc a few things to improve them as players.
