I went to the Final with my Dad and my 14 year old son. What a night. Right up there with the Uruguay World Cup qualifier, which I also attended. The crowd was immense - haven't heard an Aussie crowd like that since Uruguay either.
I thought we'd blown it when Son scored right at the end, but the Koreans tired more than us, got cramp etc. Still, they were making some more chances. Cha-Du-Ri was exceptional - he was close to man of the match I thought. But two moments of quality won it - Luongo's turn and rocket, and Tomi's obdurate persistance and delicate drag back. We went absolutely beserk when Troisi hammered it in. Korea looked like they might steal another equaliser right at the death but the striker was offside.
Bloody brilliant. And we got to boo Blatter. He looked a bit bemused but took it stoically. Not sure if the Qatari Sheikh appreciated getting booed though, but they did buy the World Cup.
Fantastic tournament all up - I'm so glad I went to a couple of games. Apparently we are bidding for the U18 World Cup, or maybe U21. Not sure. I went to the U23 World Cup in about 1993 - that was a brilliant tournament too - saw Ghanaplay Brazil in the final I think, after the Aussies made it to the semi finals. We saw players like Kevin Muscat, Paul Agostino, Nick Barmby, Stuart Pearce, Julian Joachim, Sami Kuffour, Carsten jancker, Adriano. Brilliant stuff.
